Birthday pie
Birthday pie

Happy birthday to editor Erin Zimmer! We celebrated her birthday today with a Black Bottom Oatmeal Pie from Four and Twenty Blackbirds, one of our favorite pie shops in the city. A pie with oats in it was a natural choice for Erin; she's our resident oat fanatic, so much so that by coincidence her boyfriend bought her the same pie last night. Can Erin handle this much oatmeal pie?

Oh yes. Yes she can.

We don't often get pies for people's birthdays, but we definitely should.

Erin digs into pie chunk consisting of a thin bottom layer of chocolate ganache topped with pecan-less pecan pie filling (aka, tasty sweet goo), topped with a crisp layer of oats, all in a flaky, tender crust.

Because we needed normal food to go with our pie, we went to DiPalo Selects to get a bunch of awesome sandwiches, bread, and burrata. Here Erin and fellow editor Robyn sample prosciutto at DiPalo's counter.

Robyn took on the task of holding all the sandwiches. And now we know what she looks like when she's holding too many sandwiches.

While walking around Chinatown, editor Kenji and intern Zoe stop into Prosperity Dumpling for a quick bite.

The Great Jar Opening Struggle of 2011

SE photographer Alice Gao and two of our interns Paige and Christine try with all their might to open pickle jars. We decided to try the entire line of Rick's Picks: pickled okra, pickled asparagus, pickled beets, and ten others. This meant lots of jar-opening.

Our interns were probably happier when we told them to eat a bunch of candy and write about it for our Candy A Day series.

Ting-a-Lings
Ting-a-Lings

What are Ting-a-Lings? Crunchy little bite-sized, chocolate-covered, corn meal-based clusters. If your favorite kinds of chocolates are the ones with crunch, these candies are for you—all crunch with good chocolate flavor and not too much sweetness. We got some samples in the mail and ate them pretty quickly.

Locanda Verde leftovers

You know it's a good day when SE overlord Ed comes in with a box of leftover baked goods from Locanda Verde, home to some of the best baked goods in New York City.

Intern Christine and editors Erin and Maggie dig in. There weren't many leftovers by the end of the day.

It's not everyday our table is covered in Chinese leftovers, breakfast leftovers, roast duck, candy, cookies, and toffee. Just ... that day.

Kenji in Ohio
Kenji in Ohio

Kenji's currently on a taco/food tour of Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Lexington. Here the owners of Fresh Street (@freshstreet) in Columbus, Ohio, made him wear a wooden boat for a hat after serving him some awesome hybrid Japanese/Korean/American bulgogi cheesesteak crepes and Japanese sausage-flavored takoyaki (the small spherical Japanese pancakes usually filled with octopus).

To quote Kenji, in all his shouting glory: "HOLY COW FRICKIN AWESOME AL PASTOR FROM GAUCHOS IN COLUMBUS AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!" Thanks to Columbus Food Adventures (@cbusadventures) for showing Kenji to the city's awesome eats!
