A Sandwich a Day: Sloppy Drunken Joes at Lot No. 3 in Bellevue, WA

A Sandwich a Day

A different sandwich profiled every single day.

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Known more for their well-made Manhattans and Old Fashioneds, Lot No. 3 recently expanded their menu to include lunch hours. Now instead of getting sloppy drunk here (which you can still do), you can now order the lunchtime Sloppy Drunken Joe, a from-scratch nod to the classic meal from a can.

This is far richer and more flavorful to the Sloppy Joes of childhood. The ground angus beef is mixed in a "boozy" tomato sauce that tastes like a sweet and sour whiskey barbecue sauce, topped with fried shallots and sage leaves to give it some crunch and round out the sweetness. LOT No. 3 smears the bun with a house-made Dijon mustard; it's spicier than what you'd find at other places, and it gives the sandwich an almost wasabi-like burn. All the bread here is freshly made in-house; a bite of the sesame bun yields a tender, creamy, egg-sweet flavor.

Of course it's sloppy, so don't be shy about using silverware, unless you want to risk wearing your meal the way back to work. The hefty $12 plate (available for lunch or dinner) comes with your choice of kettle chips, mixed green salad, or potato salad; go for the spuds. The hunks of potato and celery are mixed together with a creamy mustard dressing.

While there's no alcohol in the Sloppy sauce, you can still get a little sauced if you're taking advantage of the lunchtime drink specials. Daily beer and wine selections range from $3 to $6.
