Central Square in Cambridge has grown into an important food destination and the Central Square Farmers' Market gives lovers of fresh, local food another reason to visit the area.
Steve, a James Beard award nominee for Best Chef in the Northeast, was buying ingredients for his weekly "Monday Evening After Work Tapas Bar." He also told me his market finds often inspire a great staff meal for his team. We also caught Tony Maws of Craigie on Main, which is just around the corner from the market, shopping too.
Market manager Peter Ward is very proud of the select group of vendors at this market. "We have some venerable, mainstream farmers who are fantastic in terms of production: Dicks Market Garden, Steve Parker, Kimball Fruit Farm, and Keown Orchards. If there was no one else but them, we'd have a great market, but our market is enhanced by other vendors."
He went on to sing the praises of specialty vendors like longtime market mainstay Farmer Al "the Calaloo Man," Hutchins Farm for certified organic produce, Kueh Singapore Pastries, Flat Mentor Farms with their spectacular Asian greens, High Rise Bakery Company, and Austin Brothers Valley Farm Meat.
