Behind the Scenes: Riding the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile
Over the years I've had the pleasure of playing hot dog accomplice on many encased meat adventures with SE's resident hot dogger Hawk Krall, but last week's ride might have been the most glorious. Oscar Mayer invited Hawk to pass out a whopping 1,000 of their all-beef hot dogs to a hungry crowd of Philadelphians during a sweltering lunch hour with the mighty Wienermobile nearby for admiration and plenty of photo ops.
Hawk created a special menu of signature dogs for the event including a bologna-wrapped, cheese-sauced Tommy; a dressed-up Colombian Dog topped with bacon, pineapple salsa, avocado, chimichurri mayo, and crushed potato chips; a Pennsylvania Pepper Hash Dog; and a Seattle Dog crowned with caramelized onions, charred hot peppers, and a squeeze of cream cheese.
Grilled inside Oscar Mayer's new food truck, which is traveling across the country this summer, the dogs were personally passed out by Hawk (who was looking smart in his chef whites) and sent over to the condiment tent where yours truly had the honor of topping them to order.
I learned two things that day. First off, there are few words in the English language that inspire as much happiness as "free hot dogs" and secondly, everyone loves the Wienermobile. Oh, and did I mention that I got to ride in it?
