French Cavallone Melons
The first of Weiser Family Farms fantastic summer melons have arrived: the French Cavallone. Sadly, none were ripe enough to taste. They still need a few days on the counter to be ready.
Last week the Flavorosa pluots could not be beat anywhere at the market; this week, the Flavorosas at Arnett Family Farms were good, but it was the dappled green and red Watermelon Pluots that stole the spotlight.
There's nothing like a a fresh Garbanzo bean, simultaneously creamy and crunchy. They're ridiculously good tempura-battered and fried, too. They're only available for a few more weeks from Flora Bella.
There couldn't be a more perfect name for the jewel-colored raspberries from Murray Family Farms; just one will make you grin from ear to ear.
Bugs Will "Rue" the Day
Lily Balthazar has the best herbs at the Hollywood Farmers' Market. And while it's easy to wax poetic about her chamomile, lemongrass or watercress, few people know about "Rue." Not edible, a little bundle of this green herb with yellow flowers will keep the fruit flies and gnats at bay. What could be better than that?
John from Sea Fever Seafood is a hardworking fisherman. But he always has a smile on his face Sunday mornings as he greets the cadre of fans who can't resist his line-caught fish, local Spot prawns, Ridgeback shrimp and Yellow and Red Rock crabs. (They're better than Dungeness!)
Ice Cream Sandwiches from Carmela
Carmela Ice Cream makes some seriously decadent ice cream sandwiches, including one with a chocolate sea salt cookie and mint cacao nib ice cream, that will make you drool.
Blueberry Thyme Sorbet
How to end a day at the farmers' market? A taste of Carmela Ice Cream's refreshing blueberry thyme sorbet!
