A Sandwich a Day: Grilled Italian Vegetable at Artisan Cheese Gallery in Studio City, CA

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Alongside the impressive roster of cheeses, wine, and baked goods at the Artisan Cheese Gallery in Studio City is an equally impressive menu of sandwiches and salads. So impressive, in fact, it's downright daunting.

Naturally, the 20 or so sandwiches tend toward the cheese-laden, ranging from simple offerings like a classic grilled cheddar on pain de mie to elegantly composed creations (think duck confit with fig jam and le marechal cheese.) A tough choice to be sure, but luckily, on my recent visit, I came primed with a tip to go for the Grilled Italian Vegetable ($12.)

The tip proved a good one. This rustic specimen is a study in the art of the grilled sandwich, the savory olive batard from Bread Bar cooked to a perfect golden crisp and filled with all manners of grilled and roasted vegetables, a medley of sweet and earthy char from red pepper, grilled artichoke hearts and zucchini, caramelized shallots, and arugula that has just a hint of peppery spice.

A schmear of paprika aioli adds smoky heat and creaminess, and the balsamic vinaigrette gives a burst of acid. Naturally, there is cheese: a delicate Gouda-like Danish Pearl that oozes everywhere, pulling together the garden of Italian-spiced vegetables into an almost stew of a sandwich. Thick, rich, hearty, and entirely satisfying.
