A Sandwich a Day: Huipil Torta Al Pastor at Huipil in Redwood City, CA

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Huipil, a new family-owned restaurant in Redwood City, has a short menu of incredibly delicious Mexican food. One standout item is the Huipil Torta ($8), which comes stuffed with your choice of milanesa, carne asada, al pastor, hamon, chorizo, shrimp, or fish. My favorite filling is the al pastor; the slow cooked rotisserie pork is smoky, juicy, and studded with pieces of grilled pineapple.

Why choose a torta over a taco? Because that delicious pile of Al Pastor comes on a large toasted and buttered Dutch Crunch roll that's liberally spread with both spicy poblano sauce and cooling crema. The lettuce, tomatoes and red onion are all fresh and despite the myriad of ingredients, pieces of pickled jalapeno give discernible bursts of tang and spice. As if this wasn't enough, there are big hunks of perfectly ripe avocado that melt in your mouth almost as well as the layer of hot, gooey Monterrey Jack cheese.

Now if you wanted to order the torta and a taco, that I could understand.
