A Sandwich A Day: The Garden at Jimmy's Serious Sandwiches in Little Rock, AR

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Jimmy's Serious Sandwiches doesn't advertise much. It doesn't need to. The Midtown eatery is usually packed with folks from every walk of life during the lunch hour. Patrons will cruise the block looking for a place to park; the 36-spot lot shared with the hotel next door is always full.

The one sandwich that comes to mind for anyone who's ventured through the door at Jimmy's is The Garden ($6.95). Back in 1979 it won the first place in the National Sandwich Contest. Though the recipe for the sandwich is actually posted on the wall next to the door, few actually make it at home. They'd rather get their fix in the restaurant or in a lunch box to go.

It's a meaty sandwich with absolutely no meat. The combination of chopped spinach, green onion, green bell pepper, alfalfa sprouts, mushrooms, mayo, sunflower seeds, lemon juice and cheddar, Swiss, and Provolone cheeses on pumpernickel bread may not seem like it'd work, but it does—it's the perfect combination of fresh and hearty to put you back on your feet and back to work. Paired up with twice baked potatoes and a Red Zinger Iced Tea, you'll feel like you've done something good for your body. Just don't forget to check your teeth for rogue spinach bits afterwards.
