A Sandwich a Day: Charles' Grilled Cheese at Jodies in Albany, CA

In this great nation of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year--so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Jodie's, a warm hole-in-the-wall dining counter that's a treasured local secret in California's East Bay, is known for its Shopsin's-like menu of breakfast platters. Jodie and his grandson Charles are also quite handy when it comes to sandwiches. Charles' grilled cheese, a beautiful take on the American classic, ups the ante with a butterflied hot link, fluffy layers of fried egg, and a boldly buttered-and-grilled surface that rides the fine line between browned and blackened. Ironically, it's one of the lighter items on Jodie's breakfast-and-lunch-only menu.
