Sandwich a Day: Chicken No.2 at Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store in San Francisco
In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store doesn't sell cigars but they do sell some very tasty sandwiches. Of particular note are their hot focaccia sandwiches, which beat other grilled panini because they're heated in a pizza oven. The result is two thin, chewy pieces of onion focaccia with that same delicious char you'd find on a pizza crust.
The meatball sandwich ($7.50) is a local favorite, but go on and order the the Chicken No. 2 ($8.50) without fear of choking on an enormous slab of tasteless white meat. Here the focaccia is topped with two thin (we're talking Milanese-style thin) slices of supremely moist and flavorful chicken breast. For a garnish there's a layer of peppery arugula and a sprinkling of salty feta cheese. A balsamic dressing brings together the sandwich without drowning the filling.
You might want to wash down your perfectly proportioned sandwich with something from Mario's good selection of beer, wine, and aperitifs.
