Winner of last year's "Most Photogenic" title: Stephanie Patterson's Blueberry Cherry Pi Pie

It's that time of the year again. Pull out the butter and protractors because Pi Day is before us! Every March 14 we honor the math constant pi (3.14159..) with many slices of its delicious homophone pie. Whether or not you can recite out the fiftieth decimal place like your middle school math teacher, you're encouraged to grab a fork and celebrate! This year we're teaming up with the fun folks at Instructables to host the 2011 Pi Day Contest, which starts today and will run until March 20.

How to Enter

Share your best pie recipes and photos over on Instructables. Just make a free account, upload your pictures and text, and publish your entry at Instructables before March 20 at 11:59pm PST. When publishing your entry, you'll see checkboxes for open contests: be sure to select the Serious Eats Pi Day Pie Contest. Your pie will automatically be saved on our Photograzing site and show up there within about a day.

Entries need to be accepted by a moderator before they're in the contest. This usually happens quickly, but can take up to 48 hours. What matters is the submission time, not acceptance time. So if you enter it at 11:59pm on the last day, it can be accepted the next morning and still be in the contest. And then it's on to the...

Voting

After the contest closes for entries, anyone can vote for as many entries as they want. These votes help determine the finalists. The final winners will be selected by the Serious Eats and Instructables staffs.

Prizes

Not that you should need an incentive to eat more pie and channel your inner math geek, but here are a few pretty good reasons why you should enter. Did someone say iPad?

First Place: One winner will get an iPad engraved with the first 314 digits of pi—thankfully there's enough room on the back to squeeze them all! It'll be fully loaded with the entire collection of Instructables ebooks currently available, and we're throwing in a robot t-shirt for kicks.

Second Place: Three winners will receive a Pi plate, Pi apron, and a robot t-shirt.

Runner-Ups: Five winners will receive a Pi t-shirt, Pi ice cube tray, and a robot t-shirt.

Here is last year's winner: Claudette's One-Hundred-Digit Berry Pie. Cutting out 100 digits of pi from pie crust proved to be worth it! Check out all the 2010 winners here
