A Sandwich a Day: Hot Sicilian at The Deli in Fairfax, VA

In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

This strip-mall deli (next to the Kmart in Fairfax, Virginia) doesn't look like much, but the Hot Sicilian ($10 for an 8" sandwich, $13 for 12") is a sandwich worth seeking out. The meat is freshly sliced, and the bread just soft enough to make eating this monster sub easier. Topped with fistfuls of salty salami and coppa, fiery pickled peppers, and cooling provolone, the flavors mingle under a splash of oil and vinegar.

The coppa is succulent and slightly smoky, intensely meaty and moist. We'd buy a half-pound to serve at home. One warning: Even though this sandwich is huge, you're likely to devour the whole thing before you realize what's happened.
