A Sandwich a Day: Smoked Turkey at The Q Shack in Durham, NC
In this great country of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around the country. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

North Carolinians are pretty serious about unadulterated barbecue—maybe especially when it comes to making sandwiches out of it. The smoked turkey on Texas toast ($6.50) from The Q Shack is exactly what it sounds like: a deliciously simple meat-and-bread combo, ready for a slathering of one of the Shack's two housemade sauces (the potent vinegar-based garlic and chili or slightly sweet tomato with a nice snap of chipotle). The super moist hickory- and mesquite-smoked turkey practically disintegrates in your mouth, but you can tenuously hold it together by squeezing the perfect, pillowy white bread.
Who needs lettuce and tomato? Especially when there's a side of hushpuppies to shovel into your maw instead. That counts as a vegetable, right?
