Seasoned grilled chicken, house-made guacamole, cheese, mayo, and jalapeno pepper come together with magnificent results in this chicken torta from Barrio Star in San Diego. The sandwich is served on a crispy bolillo roll (which has a crunchy crust and chewy center, similar to a baguette) with a handful of homemade spiced tortilla chips and fresh salsa for $9.
The torta is rife with contrasting flavors and textures like smooth and creamy guacamole, hot and spicy slices of fresh jalapeno pepper, and juicy chicken spiked with Mexican spices. The tastiest and most surprising element is the cheese, which is fried before being placed on the sandwich, giving it a crispy, potato-chip like texture on one side. A carnitas, veggie, and carne asada version are also available.
