Weekend Cook and Tell Round Up: Edible Hand-Me-Downs

Rocquie's Heirloom Recipes. [Photograph: Rocquie]
Last week on the Weekend Cook and Tell challenge we asked all of you to share your favorite Edible Hand-Me-Downs: favorite recipes, cookware, and techniques that have been handed down though your family. Since the majority of us learned at least a little something about cooking and eating in our family kitchens and dinner tables, this Cook and Tell proved to be a popular one. Let's take a look at some of our tastiest family heirlooms.
Rocquie's mom left her with two big boxes of recipes, and not those little 3 x 5-inch recipe card boxes. We're talking big boxes filled with handwritten recipes and cut-outs from newspapers and magazines dating back to the 1950s. Rocquie and her brother made it their mission to organize all of these recipes into a usable file so that her mother's collection of recipes remains not only in the family, but usable.
morgancain's family still enjoys something they refer to as "fish Jell-O," strawberry-banana Jell-O molded into the shape of a jumping fish.
dbcurrie's mom wasn't one to write down her recipes; she was more of a learn-through-cooking kind of mom. One of db's favorite recipes that she intuited from her mother is this Cream of Tomato Soup with Homemade Noodles, more commonly known as "good soup," as opposed to the other tomato soup that came out of the red and white can.

somaR shared a sweet family heirloom recipe, Semolina and Almond Halwa, an Indian dessert scented with saffron and cardamom.
TheKitchenWitch's feelings about her Grandma Helen a mixed bag (she wasn't too fond of Donny Osmond and did boring things like play cards), but she has nothing but fond memories of her Creamed Potatoes.
BitchinFixins preferred passed-down recipe didn't come from family, per se. Instead it came from a woman named Beulah who she met while working in a retirement home in high school. With only sons and grandsons Beulah passes her Coconut Meringue Cookies recipe to BitchinFixins as well as recipes for jams and jellies and pulled pork.
therealchiffonade inherited everything from sauce pans to cutting boards from her grandmother, and even an orange and gold Lazy Susan from her mother. And when it comes to recipes therealchiffonade has been scrupulous—recording recipes and shadowing family cooks to make sure all of the finer points of the recipes are preserved.
