Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 133: Have Peaches Saved My Bacon?

I have been away from Thinner for almost two weeks now, so the potential for serious diet mayhem and backsliding was huge. I've been dreading this morning's weigh-in ever since I left for San Francisco. Why? Because I was terrified that I would give in to the notion that eating for the book would become a compelling excuse to overindulge food-wise.

My trip was filled with opportunity, motive, and built-in excuses to seriously overeat. But miraculously I didn't take advantage of most of these opportunities. Maybe, just maybe, with your help I am learning to have a different relationship with seriously delicious food.

Let me give you an incomplete list of where and what I ate in the Bay Area:

Damn. This list even scares me, and it doesn't even include any of the Los Angeles places I visited (wait until next week).

So obviously the trip could have been a serious diet disaster. But it wasn't. Why?

Because peaches (and nectarines, plums, and pluots) saved my bacon.

The stone fruit in northern California is so amazing, so sweet with just the right touch of acid, so juicy, so seriously delicious, that I would augment every aforementioned dangerous bite with a few bites of a peach, nectarine, plum, or pluot. So I would fill up with the good stuff and just try the dangerous stuff. Single bites of chocolate and sandwiches would be followed by lots of fruit and salad. I surprised even myself with my new-found discipline.

But Thinner's judgment awaits me. He's the ultimate judge. But gain or loss, I need to thank mother nature and the amazing stone fruit growers in California for their incredible bounty this summer.

The Weigh-In

Here we go. Interim weigh-ins have been encouraging but not definitive. Here we go. 219. Down a pound from two weeks ago. It's a miracle, I tell ya. Actually, it's not a miracle. Maybe, just maybe, I have learned something in these 133 weeks about how to be a serious eater without overeating. I look forward to learning even more in the next 133 weeks.
