While large-scale urban farmers' markets like San Francisco's Ferry Plaza or New York's Union Square Greenmarket may get the most media attention, the market culture in smaller cities or towns is just as exciting. My hometown of Palo Alto, California, has had a downtown Saturday market for decades, but the newer Sunday morning market on California Avenue has even more to offer. A few favorites of mine? Flavored quark cheeses from Spring Hill Cheese, fresh peaches from Kashiwase Farms, and the phenomenal rotisserie chicken from Roli Roti.

But every market has something to offer. What's the best thing at your local farmers' market?
