Another week, another gripping installment of The Next Food Network Star. This week, nine contestants showed down to defend their ever-dwindling chances at their very own Food Network show. I could almost feel the intensity, the heat, the pressure from my couch—or maybe that was the oppressive summer humidity. Either way, let's recap!!

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

Camera Challenge

For their first challenge, the contestants had to prepare a dish using a type of chili pepper. Everyone made sure to let us know that it was a BIG deal that these guys were cooking chili peppers for Bobby Flay, God of Mouth-Burning Nightshades. The dishes would be presented before camera, and the winning dish would show up on Flay's own Mesa Grill menu in locations across the country. Woo-ee!

This diva is on fiyah!!!!

Brianna is TOTALLY feeling GREAT this week. She creates some sort of cheese and chicken skewer, which the judges declare to be "very complex and very delicious." Brianna declares, "I'm on FIYAH!!!" Less enthused but certainly no less self-assured, Brad says he's "done doubting himself," and gives a solid presentation. Herb is starting to reveal his soft, emotional side, and trips through the camera challenge. Uh-oh, Herb.

Brianna took home the gold in this challenge, so she will get to see her dish appear on Bobby's menu (for a short period of time). Meanwhile, Herb and Das hit the bottom of the pack. Get it together guys—there's real challenges ahead of us.

Star Challenge

Upon entering the challenge room, Serena spots a "bunch of chefs" and feels like "something intense is about to happen." It just so happens that her poorly-informed hunch is correct—the gang just happens to be well-respected chefs Jonathan Waxman, Susan Feniger, and Eric Greenspan. (Not that we'd expect a television food expert to know such things off-hand, Serena. Don't worry.)

The three were there to pass along the week's big challenge: to recreate the chefs' favorite dishes from their childhood. The contestants were broken into groups of three and each assigned a chef and dish. Tom, Aarti, and Herb had to take on Waxman's roasted lamb and grilled potatoes. Serena, Brad, and Brianna faced off with Feniger's fried chicken and lettuce salad. And Das, Paul, and Aria tackled Greenspan's steak and mac-n-cheese. The dishes seem straightforward enough. But don't worry—plenty of mediocre food is on the way!

In the chicken group, Brianna drew inspiration from her time spent in the kitchen with her father, and made chicken and waffles. Brad took a more cheffy approach, natch, and made a big deal out of his special chicken cooking technique. Mmhmm. Serena made a traditional Italian breaded chicken cutlet—or at least, she said it was traditional, and I believed her insistence. Who am I to stand up against the crazy eyes??

I love ya, Tom, but this just does NOT look appetizing.

The lamb group saw Tom's simple but, I gotta say it, UGLY creation of roasted lamb and fingerling potatoes. Aarti made a delicious-looking lamb kebab, which blew the judges away. Herb made something... I'm not sure what, but it didn't look good and the judges were none too pleased. Waxman says that Herb "failed at every juncture." Wow. That's a lot of failure. Pull yourself together, man!

In the steak and mac-n-cheese group (does anyone else think this is just a weird combo to begin with??), Paul decides to reinterpret the dish—and by reinterpret, he means use pork instead of steak and make something completely different than Greenspan intended. Das makes prime steak with a tri-berry sauce, leading Bobby to ask him, "What's a triberry?" (Hahaha.) And Aria made steak fajitas with jalapeno mac, which the judges gave a big ole shrug.

Lots of ups and downs in the food this week, set against a backdrop of Herb's inner turmoil/hidden crying and Brianna's newfound self-confidence. Let's see what the judges made of it all.

Herb and Serena are bummed about their poor performances. Yeah, guys, I know the feeling.

Judgment Time

Basically, the steak and mac group just sucked this week. Aria was the "winner," but only because Das' berry sauce "didn't taste as bad as we thought it would." Ouch. The judges gave Herb a serious heart-to-heart, but Aarti took the win for her killer food and still-magnificent personality. And the chicken group seemed to have aced the challenge, with Brad taking top marks for his professional style and cute dimples.

Now for the bad news. In the bottom were Das, Herb, and Serena. So who's going home? Ultimately, we said goodbye to Das this week. Awwww. With one last, "It's been real" (clearly directed to his bro, Bob "Tushy" Tuschman), Das departed. I'll miss his appealing, tasty, voluptuous...food. Ahem.

One thing I will say about this episode—I was really happy to see Brianna come to life. Her food has been good so far, and I liked seeing her strut her stuff this week. Did you catch the episode? What did you make of the results??
