As I watched the rigs and pitmasters arrive last week for the Eighth Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, my anticipation for some seriously great barbecue rose to a level that could easily rival any Christmas Eve. On Saturday the long wait was finally over, as I ate my way through most of the offerings by the seventeen different pitmasters assembled from all over the country—representing the the breadth and diversity that is American barbecue.
As each pitmaster focused their attention on only their one strongest item, the barbecue found at the event truly represented the best of the best, with the fine people of New York City getting to reap the meaty rewards. With each passing year I've found this event to be as much about the food as the people; reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, with barbecue being the connecting thread that binds us all together.
Sharing good times and excellent food, this what the Block Party brings to Madison Square Park every June, and fresh off my meat high, I'm already counting down the days until the next one.
