Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 113: The Wednesday Solution
"I know, I know, some people are going to think I copped out."
Forgive me, serious eaters. For I have sinned. Big time. I have been in Houston the past two days eating my way through a city that is far more interesting than advertised.
My friend and fellow food writer (and serious eater) Robb Walsh has been squiring me around this vast, horizontally-oriented city. He picked me up at the airport Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., and proceeded to drive me around to many, many serious food stops. Eight to be exact on Wednesday, and eight more on Thursday after he ever so graciously picked me up at the incredibly comfortable and unpretentious Houstonian Club Hotel (full disclosure: the Houston Visitor's Bureau has put me up here, but I'm telling you right now I would stay here again if I could get a decent rate for a room).
So far I have been to 16 taco joints, barbecue joints, and every food place in between, in less than 48 hours. And yet I am not worried about my weigh-in? How could that be?
Well, it could be construed as one of those accounting tricks we have all read about. Stay with me here, and I will explain, hopefully in a way that you don't call me a cop-out.
I came to Houston without my trusty scale Thinner. When I told my son Will that I was headed to Houston to eat with Robb Walsh, the only thing he asked me was: Are you bringing your scale?
But I didn't feel like schlepping it to Houston. I didn't want to get on another scale here (I like to compare apples to apples), and I knew that I would be having two highly caloric days in a row.
So what did I do? I weighed myself on Wednesday morning, before I left. So instead of stepping on an unfamiliar scale, I decided to tell you guys what I weighed on Wednesday morning. 222 to be exact.
I am down a pound from last week. I know, I know, some people are going to think I copped out. But I didn't. I just wanted to arrive in Houston unencumbered by Thinner (or anybody or anything).
I hope you don't feel like I let you down, because I'm going to face you and Thinner next Friday. There's no getting away from that.
