Look Who's Talkin': Comments, Quips, and Tips We Have Known and Loved

There's so much going on in Talk week to week that we almost can't keep up. If you're in the same boat, here's a small selection of topics and responses that have piqued our interest this week.

This Question Is for All the Moms: Do You Cut the Crusts Off Your Kids' Sandwiches?

Or maybe there's a third way — cutting slits in the crusts.

"I never cut off the crusts for my kids and it was never an issue. When the heels of the bread were made into sandwiches the crust was on the inside, so the outside looked like any other sandwich, again, never an issue. I have two little grandson's who must have their crusts removed and never eat the heels. If I make sandwiches for them I do it the way their mother does, even if I secretly think it's ridiculously indulgent, but that is just me..." zilli

Feeding a Hungry Guy (Almost Like a Hippo)

Look Who's Talkin'"I'm a size 2-ish vegetarian and my boyfriend is an omnivore with a regular appetite... I like my veggies pretty plain, but when I'm making broccoli I'll throw on cheese (lots of it) for him, or bake some chicken and have that be his main course and the broccoli as a side dish. Same with pasta—main dish for me, chicken added for him.

"If I'm tired, this applies to grilled cheese. An extra sandwich with more cheese and heavier toppings (you could fry up some bacon, for example) can go for him, and one sandwich with fewer slices of cheese can work for you. We recently did baked potatoes and mine were plain with salsa, whereas his had butter, S&P and sour cream. Bacon bits could also go on that. Very filling and very cheap.

"As previous posters mentioned, portions and starches are also great routes to go." esun819

How Many Food Blogs Do You...

"I probably check about 10 to 15 regularly, but I often use the photo sites and google ingredients to find something new for the day. I probably check out at least 25+ most days of the week. I have my own blog and to answer the about question I do try and comment since I know how happy it makes me when someone leaves evidence of their visit!" sillyscorp

What Is Your Worst Cooking Disaster?

"So I had a girl over for dinner in my tiny city apartment with little to no counter space. I prepared a chicken dish for us while we were both in the kitchen chatting and drinking wine.

"Turns out, when I started the chicken and reached for my olive oil dispenser on my counter.. I instead grabbed a bottle of similar colored dishwashing soap! I finished cooking the whole thing without noticing, it wasn't until we started eating it that we realized anything was wrong.

"Totally embarrassing. Derp. The girl found it charming, though... girls are weird like that sometimes." MSCK - Liam

To Bean or Not to Bean?

"If you want to put beans in your chili do it. I put beans in my chili because that's the way I like it. I could care less what is 'traditionally correct.'" chazmo

Family Recipe You're Glad to Have

"I have a cookbook handwritten by my Mom with all our passed down family favorites. I love my Grandpa's perogi recipe...He had such a sense of humor. The recipe for the dough makes about 28 perogi while the filling recipe makes enough for 300! Took me 3 years to get it right! Thanks Papa!" bubbleandsqueak

Why Are Onions So Expensive?

"Cheese and Onions," The Rutles.

"Last weekend I cornered my Costco guy (the 'important looking' one) and asked him why they'd been out of their bags of onions two weekends in a row. He told me they'd been out of them for a month, actually. The entire Mexican crop was wiped out by rain, he said, and they get all their onions from Mexico. They were trying to source them from somewhere else, but they'd only been able to get in small quantities which went quickly. He finished by telling me, 'If you'd been here on Thursday, we had some in the morning. But they were gone by noon.'" Teachertalk

Why Are My French Fries Limp?

"Try some Friagra." smokey07

Cook's Illustrated vs. Food52

"I subscribed to Cook's Illustrated when I was around 20, but I don't recall making many of the recipes. Then again, that was before I was completely obsessed with food. I still watch America's Test Kitchen every Saturday and had never heard of Food 52 until this post. Now I think I'm obsessed with that because I've been checking out the website all day."
