Video: Cat Drinking Water With its Paw, and Other Drinking Methods
How does a cat drink water? Let me count the ways. It can dip its paw into a bowl and lick the water off; it can stick its head under a faucet and catch the water that drips off its head; it can stick its head in a bowl and lap up the water; it can lap the water from a running faucet. And more, all much more compelling than humans drinking water. (And if you're wondering whether "cats drinking water" is food-related enough, I say "yes.") Watch the videos after the jump.

I'm sure there are more, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

My old cat used to love drinking out of glasses with his paw.

A certain cat I know drinks primarily from the toilet.

That is not the dumbest cat in the world ...s/he is simply fastidious.

My cat drinks with his paws on and off. Very cute :)

My cat dips her paws in her water dish. After doing this several times, she'll then drink normally from the dish. Odd, but adorable to watch.

oh my, the one that dunks it's head under the faucet is hilarious!

I ditto @kris10 - that is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

My parents' cat does the paw dip, though, like dyanniek's cat, she will usually start drinking normally after she has satisfied herself that the water is sufficiently delicious and the proper temperature. Their cat also likes to drink the water that collects in the metal guard on the bottom of their shower door. Filthy, soap-filled water. She seems to love that like no other, though.
My cat will drink normally from her bowl, but also likes to drink from a running fountain. Unfortunately, she's fairly fluffy, and the water often gets diverted by the fur around her face. Also, we just finished remodeling out bathroom, so for a while we had to use the guest bath. That bathroom has a tub-shower combo. After we would shower, my cat would jump in and lick the water off the plastic shower curtain liner thing. What a weirdo.

When cats bat at their water bowls before drinking, I think they're trying to determine if there's water in there. They're looking for movement. That's my theory, anyway. Who knows why cats do anything they do.
My cat has taken to drinking out of glasses as well as her bowl. I keep two water glasses on my bedside table - one is mine and one is hers. Weirdly, she knows the difference.
I just love that cat ducking its head under the faucet. What a little freak.

i LOVE corelle ware! they need to make the cups like they did when that pattern was around. the ceramic cups they have now are too delicate, in comparison, and they aren't the right shape, psychologically.

Wow, regrettablefoodie, I'm impressed. I'm absolutely positive you are right about the cats looking for movement. Everybody I know thinks I'm crazy, but they never watched my cat make that suspicious look at the bathtub, and then dip her paw in to find the water level before drinking. I think cats can't see water very well. I'm guessing some cats prefer to drink off their paws in general, but the ones who dip a couple of times then drink normally are looking for the level so they don't stick their noses in the water.

One of our cats likes to stick her head under the faucet too, but we don't have it on full blast like in the video. The water collects in big drops on her head and she shakes them off if the other cat isn't there to lick off the water. We got our cats one of those circulating, faucet-like water bowls since they like the sink so much, but they were scared of the noise of the motor so we returned it.

Just like humans ... cats water needs flavur too. paw flavur is best!

@RegrettableFoodie- My cat likes to drink from a glass on the bedside table, too. I keep a water bottle for myself and a glass for her. I used to have a glass for myself until I woke up wearing my water late one night. She spilled my glass, but never spills her own.
She also really likes to dring out of the toilet tank using the paw-dip method. I guess it's better than drinking out of the toilet bowl.

these are so good. my cat loves to drink out of EVERYONE'S glasses, usually resulting in the displacement of their contents all over my apartment. i wish he was as funny as the faucet-lover in that video

I have one lard-butt who loves to drink out of the toilet bowl. What a beautiful sight he is from the back. LOL The other one drinks out of his water dish and any other receptacle holding water, except the toilet. He loves the water at the bottom of planters?
