Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 110: Road Trip Diet?
"I don't know if I can overcome the two days of food debauchery."
I've been dreading today's weigh-in ever since I found out that our food road trip was taking place on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. I suppose it could have been worse. (Our road trip could have taken place on a Wednesday and Thursday.)
Still, there's no escaping the fact that it was tough diet sledding in our Buick LaCrosse. We started with a noon stop at Walter's, a great pagoda-shaped hot dog stand in Mamaroneck, New York. I took one bite of a single, a bite of the double dog, two sips of a chocolate malt, and a single sweet potato fry. So far, so good. But we still had eight stops to go.
Houston, I think we have a problem. Perhaps a garden tour would have been a healthier alternative
Lunch was really fine pizza and a salad at the excellent Tarry Lodge in Port Chester, New York. Dinner was at the exemplary and inspired Craigie on Main. Lord, that Tony Maws can cook. Our post-Craigie nightcap was at Toscanini's ice cream, conveniently located right next door to Maw's restaurant. Four of us shared a scoop of burnt caramel ice cream with hot fudge and a scoop of malted vanilla with burnt caramel sauce. Both sound heavenly, right? They were, take my word for it.
We stopped at the fine Clear Flour Bakery in Brookline, Massachusetts, right after a business meeting. Alas, they were out of their fabled morning buns, but an orange brioche was a moist, light, and flavorful alternative.
We stopped at Cutty's, a sandwich shop opened by Charles Kelsey, a friend of Food Lab columnist J. Kenji Lopez-Alt. The dude makes really serious homemade potato chips and two extremely tasty diminutive hero-like sandwiches (spuckies in South Boston vernacular).
Two stops in Providence, at a cheese-cum-sandwich shop Farmstead (have the primordial oozing grilled cheese), and at the Chez Pascal hot dog trucks, where the fried egg and brisket sandwich rocked the house; and a final stop in West Haven for an excellent New Haven-style sausage pizza at Zuppardi's later, we made it home by 6 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Thursday was a day of food recovery for me. I did pretty well, but I don't know if I can overcome the two days of food debauchery. I guess the most important thing is that I didn't throw in the towel—or should I say the tape measure, and I did try to eat everything in moderation.
It's just that everything in this case was an awful lot of food. And I did manage to get right back on the diet horse.
Here goes. Damn. 224. Up two pounds. The moral of the story: don't schedule a food road trip on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Or a Thursday for that matter. Next time, I'm going to use the Buick LaCrosse for a garden tour instead.
