Vancouver 2010 Olympics: Top 10 Grab and Go

In the run up to the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver food blogger Melody Fury (Gourmet Fury) is dropping by to guide travelers to the city's hidden gems in a series of Top 10 Local Recommendations. These locations are easily accessible from Downtown (within walking distance or by public transit). The recommendations boast of the unique, international delights that this beautiful sea-to-sky city offers. —The Mgmt.

Sport events aside, all eyes turn to three things during the 2010 Olympics:

  1. The weather. It's been a balmy 10°C (50°F) out and VANOC is worried that there won't be enough snow. (chuckle)
  2. The parties. Just ask any local and they'll point you to the right direction.
  3. The food. Naturally.

Surrounded by a plethora of regional and ethnic cuisines, YVR locals are always in search of the most authentic flavours, most innovative meals, and the best deals.

The first Vancouver Top 10 features our favourite Grab and Go joints. These are cheap and cheerful establishments that do not skimp out on the quality. Vancouverites eat well, no matter how busy our schedules are!

1. Fish 'n Chips: It's silly to visit the Pacific Coast without indulging in a basket of deep-fried fish. Locals swear by this famous stand on the skirt of Granville Island. It's worth the wait. 2. Bánh mì Vietnamese Sandwiches: This family restaurant is famous for their amazing crusty French style baguettes. Try it loaded with Vietnamese pâté, shredded pork, and pickles, or dip it in their hearty beef stew. Arrive early before they run out of bread. Au Petit Cafe, 4851 Main Street (map)

3. Poutine: Gravy, cheese curds, and fries. This is as Canadian as it gets. After a long night of partying, a visit to the fry house is mandatory. Kick it up with signature dips like mango curry chutney and curry ketchup. Fritz European Fry House, 718 Davie Street (map)

4. Bubble Tea: Fruit and milk teas, slushes, or even shakes with chewy bits such as tapioca pearls or coconut jelly is something we hold dear. A bubble tea with the works is not only refreshing, but also quite filling. After much debate with other foodies on Twitter, we've concluded that Dragon Ball Tea House is THE place to go. 1007 W. 5. SE Asian Street Fare: Get your fill of fiery and vibrant dishes to-go for under $5. Their signatures include noodle dishes such as Malaysian Laksa and Mee Goreng, but save room for flavorful curries and satays. Hawker's Delight, 4127 Main Street (map)

6. Fresh Lebanese: Meat lovers and vegetarians alike will love this organic and modern Middle Eastern restaurant. All dishes can be served as a plate for dining-in, or as a wrap to-go. Try their seasoned lamb skewers with a side of crispy cauliflower. Nuba, 1206 Seymour Street (map)

7. Tacos: This humble taco joint serves up local meats such as Pemberton cow tongue and braised Chilliwack pork cheek. Equally delicious vegetarian options such as mushrooms in chitpole or roasted poblanao peppers with creamed corn are also available. La Taqueria, 322 West Hastings Street (map)

8. Modern Indian Takeout: Vij's Restaurant is a legendary Indian restaurant that many can only dream to dine there, partly because of the price point but also because the lineups can be three hours long. Luckily, the casual sister-restaurant next door sells his famed dishes packaged and ready for the microwave. Rangoli, 1488 W. 11th Avenue (map)

9. Crêpe and Parisian Hotdogs: If you've ever visited Paris, you'll know that the smell from the steamy crêpe carts makes it impossible to resist. Experience a savory or sweet crêpe, or a long and skinny Parisian dog to-go at one of their three locations. 10. Steamed Buns and Apple Tarts: Vancouverites are trendsetters but we also love our old-school eats. New Town is renowned for their classic steamed buns, filled with minced pork, chicken, or beef. Their equally famous apple tarts sell like hotcakes. I know people that have smuggled them back to San Francisco but I won't say how. New Town Bakery, Chinatown: 158 E. Pender Street (map).
