On a recent visit to my home state of North Carolina, biscuits were at the top of my list of things to eat, keeping company with other fine foods like barbecue and pie. I'd heard raves about Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen in Chapel Hill, so that's where we headed Saturday morning.
It's a small drive-though-only joint—you can't miss the line of cars snaking around it. But don't fret, the line moves quickly.
We ordered chicken, country ham, sausage, and egg-and-cheese biscuits from the drive-through menu and pulled through to the window, where our order was already bagged and ready to go. I feared this might mean cold biscuits, but they were just as I hoped—tall, tender, buttery golden, and still warm.
Encasing an expertly fried and well-seasoned piece of boneless white chicken meat, the chicken biscuit was our favorite biscuit. The country ham biscuit, not too salty and with the right amount of chew and porky goodness, came in a close second.
In retrospect, country ham and egg biscuit would be awfully close to the perfect biscuit. Guess I'll just have to make another trip back to confirm.
