Look Who's Talkin': Comments, Quips, and Tips We Have Known and Loved

Wow. A lot went on in Talk this week. We had a vote to determine Funniest, Most Helpful, and Most Congenial Talker of 2009 and a vote for Best Thread. That must have primed the pump for polls, because y'all overwhelmingly called for more, more, more. (We'll start on Monday!). So here's the first LWT of 2010. You kept me busy today.

What's the Biggest Meal You Have Ever Eaten?

"I ate a Tiramisu that was supposed to serve 12." CatBoy

'50s Housewife Nibblers

Look Who's Talkin'"Definitely deviled eggs. Also celery stuffed with pimento-cheese. And the Lipton Onion Dip potato chip deal. Ambrosia salad, anyone? Pineapple, coconut, fruit salad, etc. Altho why anyone would want to inflict this on their guests is beyond me. :-)" LauraJ

Food Reporting/Journalism Trends That You Hate

"I'm sick to death of the magazines dumbing everything down, and emphasizing how eeeeeezy everything is, and how anyone can do this, and in 30 minutes, with some whipped topping and EVOO, you too can be just like your favorite FN star. None of this is about cooking. As much as I can't stand Chris Kimball, at least his publications and shows assume that you know something about cooking and aren't an idiot. In the papers, it seems that the restaurant reviewers are shooting for the high ground, they seem to assume that an interested gourmet/gourmand will be knowledgable and impressed by the skills and innovations restaurants are presenting, then the magazines and tv shows turn around and show you how to make mac and cheese for the Nth time." spiceweasel

"The guy lost 50 pounds. When you lose that much weight, some of it comes off your face and your overall appearance, not just your shape, changes. I also think that the baggy-looking shirts might be what makes his weight loss not look right to som. Also, losing that much weight over 9 months isn't that bad. It's a little faster than the recommended 1 lb/week, but not by much." joyyy

Guy Fieri's REAL Name?!

"Agreed Cybele. And not just Italians, funny thing about the US is that the prejudices are always changing. Both of my dad's parents last names were changed to be more American (Irish and German) at some point in the past. Good thing food allows us to reconnect with our heritage and pasts. :)" winternutt

What's the Worst Burn You've Endured While Cooking?

"Here's another ... I wasn't cooking. I was about 8 years old and was sitting in a chair at the table next to grandma's stove, which was in the corner in their very small house. She took the coffee pot off the burner, turned, hit the back of my chair with it, and the whole pot of coffee went right down my back. As strong as grandma's coffee was, that's probably why my back and shoulders are so hairy today..." LunaPierCook

Alton Brown's Diet

Another Rookie Mistake I Wish I'd Stop Making

"My dad gave me a copy of Joy of Cooking when i was 15 or so. He wrote a big lovely inscription in the front that included his top 3 cooking tips. Never walk away from the stove, use the best ingredients possible, and always read through the entire recipe a couple of times. It's pretty sage advice and i've always followed it." gastronomeg

Shortcuts That DO NOT Work

"Cooking up blue box mac and cheese in a Pyrex measuring cup in the microwave, and then letting the disgusting mess that's not even edible sit overnight without cleaning it. (I was a stupid college student on a budget and a friend said it would work!)" cycorider

If You Love to Cook, Do You Friends Expect You to Be Thin or No?

"As long as I keep cooking and baking things they enthusiastically wolf down, I doubt my friends mind much whether I look like a praying mantis or Jabba the Hutt; I doubt they even think about it, to be honest." mongoose

Does Anyone Else Have SE 'Finger Memory'?

"I have the same set up as @lemonfair on both Mozilla at home and IE at work. It is always visible. I just click it on my toolbar. The first site I went to to test drive my PSP was SE. :)" Cassaendra

[Um, PSP, Cassaendra? This cries out for "You might be a nerd if ..." Heh. Just kidding. I've looked at SE on my Wii. —AK]

'May I See the Wine List?' 'No problem.' ??!!

"Am I the only one who responds to 'Thank you' with 'My pleasure'? That is my usual response. If it wasn't my pleasure, I'd just say 'You're Welcome.'" PerkyMac

How Did You Learn to Cook?

"When you're Italian you always end up in the kitchen no matter what room you started out in. As infants we don't get pacifiers, we get a spatula." Gary
