Standing Room Only: Jeni's Ice Cream

The Short Order: Creamy and complex ice cream
Want Fries with That? Just sweets here but check out the Belgian fries in the next stall.

Like many people, my wife and I spent the holiday season driving all over the country visiting family. The final tally was 18 hours in the car over seven days. Much of that trip was to Columbus, Ohio, so I could have Christmas at my sister's house.

I lived for a year in that fine city and figured it would be nice to extend my very Chicago-centric Standing Room Only column to include the largest city in Ohio.

But I'll be damned if I could think of many stands in the city. All of my favorite options in the city are places like The Northstar Cafe and the Thurman Cafe which have plentiful seating available. I did find this crazy late-night pizza place on High Street called Late Night Slice serving up slices in an alley with movies projected on the side of a brick wall while you wait—but the pizza was just average.

Suddenly it all hit: Jeni's Ice Cream. I should mention now that Jeni's Ice Cream is my favorite ice cream. I so loved the stuff that once I even tried to personally take some to Serious Eats World Headquarters in New York.

I packed my suitcase full of a few gallons of it, sandwiching it between bags of dry ice to help keep it cool for the flight. I got all the way to the departure gate before security was flagged and my large bag stuffed full of dry ice was confiscated.

Who knew dry ice was illegal to carry on a flight? Anyway, to make the flight I had to sacrifice all of the ice cream. I've heard that they now sell Jeni's in New York.

But I'd like to write about the original location in the North Market, a large indoor market in the Arena District that's also home to a butcher, fishmonger, and fantastic cheesemonger along with a whole slew of little food vendors.

To be absolutely fair, there are a bunch of tables available on the second floor, which should disqualify this as a Standing Room Only—but no one orders a scoop of ice cream, then walks up a flight of stairs to sit on a bench. Most people just get one and meander around the market taking in the scene. So I'm counting this as a stand.

Jeni's was started by Jeni Britton Bauer, and according to her delightful biography, she aims to make ice creams that "are less sweet and more flavorful." That couldn't be anymore true.

They are creamy and luxurious, with dominant flavors and just a bit of sugar to help it go down. What they are really known for is there inspired flavor combinations.

Honey Vanilla Bean, Thai Chili, Wildberry Lavender, and Smoked Chocolate aren't exactly the flavors found at most ice cream shops. They even have an honest seasonal menu. That's where you can find White Chocolate Evergreen with a Red Currant Garland, Scandinavian Winter Spices, and the Dark Chocolate Peppermint, in case you were wondering. Like the best ice cream shops, tasting before buying is encouraged.

But if you go to Jeni's there are two flavors you just have to get. The first one is a salty caramel—a perfect combination of salty and sweet, addicting like caramel popcorn.

The second is the Queen City Cayenne, which is spicy and complex, one that will sting your tongue for a few minutes afterward until you get the courage to dig in again (as noted here before.)

There are five Jeni's locations in Columbus. I've been known to go to the one on High Street, too, but prefer the one in the North Market because I think it represents Columbus at its finest. Pick up a scoop or two and take it to go.

YES!
salty caramel is my FAVE!
so glad to see the 'bus getting some love!
(oh, and i highly suggest pouring a shot or two of espresso over the salty caramel...heavenly! you can do that over at cup of joe in german village...it's next to the book loft on high street)

Ann Arbor > Columbus.
GO BLUE!

There's also now one in the Short North -- on High Street past the North Market -- and Dublin, too.

My favorite is Cherry Lambic. It's more like a sorbet with a great balance of sweet and acid. It finishes with a wheaty lambic note that adds depth and really takes it to the next level.

There's also a great ice cream with Maker's Mark.

I am BEYOND thrilled that somebody is finally talking about a city other than New York or LA for great food! I'm a Columbus native, and Jeni's is the best. They make the most beautiful little French macaroon ice cream sandwiches with lavender or violet ice cream, they're insane.

Nick, have you ever tried the Vietnamese stand in the North Market? The spicy saltiness of Vietnamese food with the sweet creaminess of Jeni's is the yin and yang of my North Market visits :)

Having it available there means you won't have to stand in line for an hour. Lucky you! We gave up when we were at the Short North location.

A few months later, we found the ice cream available in Cleveland at the grocery store we frequent. I have yet to pick some up though. We couldn't stomach paying $8-9/pint.

I am so glad to hear that Jeni's is coming to NY..the ice cream is crazy good-especially the Salted Caramel ......nom nom nom...

you can have this delivered anywhere in the country from jeni's website. i've done this before as a gift and people love it. it's my favorite ice cream of all time.

Wow, thanks for doing a CBus posting! Born and raised. Don't know Jeni's but I remember the North Market when it was in that busted warehouse space, though. Definitely going to have to swing by and try some!

I had the brown butter with almond brittle a few days ago...seriously awesome. I wish they would make it a signature.

I'm supposed to be going to Columbus at the end of January for work. I'll have to put this on the extra-curricular activities list!

Jeni's has expanded to New York. I think she sells them in Brooklyn somewhere.

Excellent review! I love Jeni's Ice Cream and Columbus! My favorite ice cream EVER! Northstar Cafe, which is also mentioned, is another must-do in C-bus.

I'm headed back to Cbus tomorrow (leaving from my new home in San Diego) to celebrate "christmas" with my family. I loved Jeni's while going to OSU. And even though it's going to be single-digit windchills, i'll be waiting outside for a scoop or two.

P.S. Cbus is not ohio's biggest city, as the author says in this post. Cleveland is (much) bigger as is Cincinnati.

I finally got to to some Jeni's this past weekend on our Christmas trip to the fiance's family. We went to the Bexley location. The ice cream was definitely good, but not my favorite. The dark chocolate had a nice rich chocolate flavor, but I think the Belgian Milk Chocolate is lacking a bit. The cherry lambic sorbet was awesome, probably my favorite flavor that I sampled. I wound up getting a scoop of the pistachio, which was a little too buttery tasting and salty, not really sweet enough. I suppose it's better than the typical flaw of overly sweet pistachio ice cream though.

@Nick- you really need to check out Ruth & Phil's here in Chicago. They sell pints at quite a few gourmet shops in the city (Goddess & Grocer, Z&H, Downtown Farmstand. . . ). It's the same type of ice cream as Jeni's, but I think it's even better.

LOVE NORTH MARKET! Anyone headed to Columbus needs to check it out. The Brisket is to die for.. the cheese monger had a simple, yet awesome cheese sampler.. And Mozarts Bakery, yummy treats and the best cappuccino I've ever had. And of course.. Jeni's!

I love Jeni's, especially the seasonal flavors! This summer, my favorite was sweet corn and blackberry - sounds weird, but awesome (no corn kernels, the cream must just be infused with it).

And justin h - I'm pretty sure that technically, Columbus IS Ohio's biggest city; Cleveland and Cincinnati just have bigger metro areas.

Psssst.

You can now pickup pints at The Goddess & Grocer in Bucktown (12 flavors) and the Gold Coast (4). If there's a particular flavor you'd like that isn't there, be sure and let 'em know.

Jeni's is definitely my favorite ice cream place evah!
