Weekend Giveaway: Nudo Olive Tree Adoption

One of the best gifts I've probably ever given a friend was adopting a manatee in her name through the Save the Manatee Club. She received an actual photo of Brutus, her new sea cow bundle of joy, his bio, and a super official certificate. [Ed. note: this was very much inspired by manatee enthusiast Robyn.]

Our weekend giveaway has nothing to do with manatees but it's another neat opportunity to support an adoptive cause. Nudo is a family-run co-operative of olive groves around a small hilltop village in the Marche region of Italy. Through this one-year adoption ($150), you get to follow the progress of your own tree—the olive variety is up to you—and of course get some of the quality olive oil.

The oil deliveries will be spread out over 2010: four 500ml tins of first cold press extra virgin olive oil in the spring and three 250ml tins of infused extra virgin olive oil (like lemon, chile, or orange) in the fall. Not only do you get to douse salads and dunk bread in the tasty stuff but support an Italian family farmer who grew those olives.

To enter to win, just tell us your favorite type of olive. And even if you don't win, the adoption still makes a great holiday gift.

Contest will end and comments will close at 3 p.m. ET, Monday, November 9, 2009. One entry per community member. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

I would love to win this, what a treat to follow the progress of your tree and then receive all that wonderful olive oil. I suppose I don't have a favorite olive, I'm not an olive enthusiast, but love, love, love olive oil. I really enjoy putting black olives on the tips of all my fingers and eating them one by one. Childish I know; but what's wrong with being childish every once in a while?

i love the olives that have the red jellys inserted into them haha

I really only distinguish olives by black or green, in which case I prefer green most of the time.

My favorite type of olive oil is the kind that comes from my very own tree!.....Too bad I don't have that tree.....*yet* :-)

My favorite type of olive is a black olive, but only if it comes with pizza underneath it :-)
However, my love of olive oil is great and worthy...

Oh, I love olives! My favorite of all are the large green olives with proscuitto wrapped cheese inside. A couple of them and some crackers and I have a meal. Oh, and I have both Italian and Spanish olive oil at home.

What a neat gift to give someone for the holidays.

Had to choose but my favorite olive is niçoise

i don't eat a lot of olives, but i love olive oil. I use it a lot.

kalamata hands down...

Like piehole I don't eat olives but I love olive oil! I could make a meal out of spicy olive oil and bread alone, so good.

Love regular ol' black olives on pizza. Yum!

Nicoise olives are the perfect size for snacking and the herb-y smell reminds me of sitting on the beach in the south of France with a nicoise salad.

Probably picholine or kalamata. But there's also nicoise, cerignola, ligurian...

hhh. I'm not too well versed with all the olives at the olive bar that i've tried. but i have really enjoyed kalamata olives!

luganos, or any type swimming in some martini

The big green ones. But any of them stuffed with garlic or jalapenos are great.

picholine! could eat a bucket of those babies.

Nicoise were the first to make me realize that I actually like olives, just not crappy canned ones.

garlicky, stuffed with blue cheese, in a martini.

kalamata...but i love those big green ones too....

Those oil-cured black ones....so so so good.

mm... probably kalamatas... or those big huge purpley ones... yum!

kalamata, def.

I love the infused oils, I had an amazing basil for a while that was great. The actual olives...hmm...have to be the huge deli ones that are marinated.

I had my first olive my freshman year of college when my Dad took me to a fantastic pizza place in D.C. They gave us a little tray of olives, and he told me to try one. I loved all of them--the Kalmata, Amphissa, the green olives and Manzanillas. However, stuffed green ones are the favorite of my dad and I, and whatever chance I get I pick up either garlic or jalapeno olives to share.

kalamatas are awesome!

any kind, but my favorite is kalamata

I love those simple green olives you can get in a can, with the pit. I don't know why, I just like nibbling away at them.

For eating out of hand I like cerignola or alfonso olives, as both tend to be large and meaty, while not overwhelmingly salty. I also love to cook with Moroccan oil cured olives, though, because they have an intense umami flavor, and I can leave out or reduce salt in a cooked dish to compensate for the olives.

Kalamata and nicoise are both my faves!

This has got to be the BEST giveaway ever and a great idea for a foodie gift. Love it!

Oh, and Kalamata :)

Kalamata olives are yummy and my daughter loves them too.

Also not a fan of olives themselves, but quality olive oil is divine!

I'm a fan of most olives, and my favorites are the wrinkly salt-cured black ones that I don't have a name for.

Black olives, from a can, only on Thanksgiving.

Crap, I don't have very deep olive knowledge, either! I love the giant green ones that are often stuffed with garlic (they sell the jars at Trader Joe's). I've never met an olive I didn't like, though.

i love those oil-cured black ones, although I fondly remember a kind we used to get in California called Graber that were very fine.

Definitely kalamata! I would eat them everyday if I could!

small french green olives from Sahadi's on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn

My favorite kinds of olives are the Greek kalamata, the French picholin and the niçoise, the Spanish manzanilla and the Italian lugano.
This is an amazing contest and you are right that this would be a wonderful gift.
If I win I would love to follow my olive tree’s progress over the next year on my food blog.
;-)

Olives kind of freak me out a little (they remind me of eyes- don't ask), but I love love love olive oil. My favorite olive is one that has been squeezed of all its tasty life juices.

My favorite olive is whichever one I happen to be ingesting at the time!

kalamatas are my personal favorites

kalamatas for me too.

Kalamata, always.

Oh, I love all olives. If I had to pick a favorite I think I would go with green olives stuffed with garlic.

I like all olives... especially those I can put on my fingers!

I have to say that the canned black olives of my childhood will always have a special place in my heart.

Olive Oyl, Olive Hoover, Olive Snook, garlic-stuffed giant green olives, and obsessed with the thought of making Nonno's olives (from NYT).

I love all olives, but if I have to pick one, it would be a large green olive with the pit still in. They are just perfect.

I love all sorts of olives, but especially big, fat, meaty Queen Manzanilla ones.

Lucques olives

Cerignola, for sure. They have a meaty texture and are so full of flavor, but somehow manage to not be overbearing. You can throw them in a soup or stew for a nice accent, but they can also hold their own alone. I love them, and can barely resist buying them every time I see them.

Kalamata, no question. I especially like them in pasta sauces.

My favorite kind of olive? Any kind that is in front of me just waiting to be tasted! I just love them all!

Oo! Five years ago, I would have said kalamata hands down, but the Provencal and greek green olives are winning me over of late...

O'love 'em all. Especially the green ones in oil that look like gems.

i love the wrinkled black gaeta olives - super yummy with some goat chese!

It's a tie between kalamata and the black oil-cured ones.

I snack on black Cerignolas like they're fruit (which they are, of course). I cook with Morrocans in oil, I think they're more aromatic when cooked and they impart a wonderful flavor to the dish (pork tongue stew with onion and olives, for example).

I actually don't like olives at all. But I love olive oil, even when it's really fruity. So go figure.

definitely kalamata for me! :)

Niçoise. Always niçoise.

kalamata olives are so salty i have to nibble away at them in pasta dishes. but so so tasty.

Whatever type is in my refrigerator and available for tasty snacking!

Depends entirely on what I'm doing with them, but the two kinds I buy most often are black oil-cured and the huge garlicky ones at the middle eastern grocery around the corner

I don't have a favorite variety of olive or anything, but I have been really enjoying the olives I picked up at TJ Maxx recently. There were some stuffed with garlic, some stuffed with onion and soaked in gin, some stuffed with jalapeño and left to brine in a solution with other peppers.

Love Olive Oil, just not eating olives...

I usually like kalamata with my salads, but I loooove lugano.

Olive them! Truly--it's like trying to pick a favorite ice cream.

Perhaps boring/typical, but I'd say kalamata. I like spicy olives of any variety, too!

I love green Cerignola olives, but cannot stand black Cerignolas. I like Kalamatas and nicoises too.

My favorite olive ever was served to us on the Costa Brava at a teeny tiny restaurant by the sea. I have no idea what kind they were or what they were brined with, but it was pure olive crack. Couldn't stop eating them.

some nice kalamatas ground up into a tapinade.

My favourite olive is Kalamata olives---mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

I really love the green cracked olives I had when I spent time with my family in Israel.

Kalamatas and Nicoise..salty, briney goodness!

Mine would be olive oil soap :)

Kalamata all the way!

I don't know the names of the olive varieties I eat because they never seem to be included on the label, but my favourite olives right now are organic green olives that are stuffed with garlic.

I love cerignola olives!

I love any variety of olive made into tapenade... especially on a muffuletta. yum.

I spent some time in Turkey last spring, and the olives there were simply amazing. I'm not sure what the kind was that was my favorite, but it was a large green one. I also enjoyed the memeli olives (they were the only ones I was told the type of!)

Niçoise olives are my favorite!

I don't think I ever met an olive that I didn't love. But Kalamatas were the first olives I ever had that weren't the canned black or pimento-stuffed green ones. So the Kalamata will always have that special place in my heart.

Nicoise for me too. Love em on picnics, in salads and martinis :)

Not so crazy about olives. About the only way I like them is in the olive spread they use to make New Orleans Muffalettas. I do love a good olive oil though.

I don't care for olives themselves, but use their oil all the time!

Not so crazy about olives, but I love manatees. Thanks for the link to the save a manatee club. If I win the lottery manatees are my beneficiary.

I have loved just about every olive I've ever tasted, but green olives stuffed with feta are definitely my favorite.

I have not met an olive I didn't like.

all olives (except maybe ones that are too hard to pit)

i also want to learn more about different olive oils.

Love me some olives...my favorite would have to be kalamata :) Hope I win!

I love olives! My favorite is Kalamata. This is a wonderful prize!

Gotta go with the Kalamatas!

Manzanillas are good but I love Picuals.

Any olive variety is a good one, but Kalamata is a great one!

When I married, I discovered my Armenian father-in-law always eats oil-cured olives with eggs and bread in the morning. I'd never had them before, and found the strong taste almost overwhelming. I'm now *addicted* to them. They are wonderful little bites with very strong, deep olive flavor. Yum!

This is a brilliant idea! It's going on my Christmas list (if necessary!)
Olives are like wines to me. I sample many wonderful varieties, make a mental note of which I prefer and why, and then promptly forget. Oh, darn, I have to repeat the process!
I do know that, as with cheese and ham, I tend to prefer Spanish.

Any green olive, preferably stuffed with chili or almonds!

Kalamata olives, definately. On a good Greek salad.

I like regular sliced green olives on a sausage pizza.

I love all olives, but can't live without Manzanillas

There is no olive I do not love; but I love those dried, shriveled ones from Morocco the best.

the olive stuck deep into my bloody mary during a lazy sunday brunch.

pimento stuffed "martini" olives. i used to suck the pimentos out then eat the olive--straight from the jar, when parents were drinking martinis

Kalamata or black cerignola or regular green pimento-stuffed, or garlic stuffed...

I love those little arbequinas.

Kalamata but not in brine--must be oil cured

I had to look it up because, like many other above, I'm not familiar with the names, but Lucque olive are quite tasty.

Lugano, for real.

Nicoise olives to eat out of hand.
A hand stuffed blue cheese green olive for my martini.

Olive oil with pepper flakes

Definitely Kalamata, or ones stuffed with parmesan cheese...mmmm

Kalamata are my favorite!

picholine with a little lemon zest and red pepper....mmmmm, too good

I love any kind of cured black or purple olives, but Gaeta and Alfonso are my favorites.

Picholine...or a big green one stuffed with a smoked almond. yum.

I love the ones that have been pressed into oil. :)

feta-stuffed green olives. or black oil cured ones. I love the oil most of all- I practically drink it if it's good enough.

I love kalamatas with pasta and manzanillas plain or chopped in soups

young, fat, green cerignolas. and sadly those gross pimento stuffed ones in the grocery store

Yes, I'm boring, but I'll pop kalamata after kalamata in my mouth just like candy (but picholines are nice too, and Gaetas... )

Never met an olive I didn't love. My current favorite is picholine. It will be something else next week...

Oh, I love olives so very much. It's a toss-up between a buttery cerignola or the always delicious kalamatas...

I love olives! My favorite depends on my mood - sometimes cerignola, sometimes arbequina, sometimes picholines, sometimes nicoise, sometimes picual, sometimes manzanilla - give them all to me.

the little spanish arbequina olives, hands down.

been craving saltiness lately and it's been satiated with the kalamata olives. :)

I still remember the first time I had a kalamata olive. I was 13 years old, and my family had decided to picnic with some friends along a river. One person had brought along a bunch of kalamatas and was raving about them. I was eager to try one, but when I did, I thought they were awful. But after eating them at random intervals over the years, I've grown to love them; they're now my favorite :)

Not really a huge fan of olives but olive oil is a wonderful thing.

I have never meet an olive I didn't love. Since I am just back from Madrid, I will say arbequina olives with a nice red wine at an outdoor tapas bar.

My olive of the moment is garlic-stuffed green. Yum!

Yum! Warm mixed olives with fennel, orange zest and Anaheim chile. My favorite olive is the gaeta.

I actually don't love olives: I like tapenades and things, but am not a huge fan of eating olives by themselves.

...but I sure do love olive oil :)

Jalapeno stuffed green olive!

kalamatas are popular in my house too

Nicoise are definitely my favorite, but I'm a sucker for jalapeno-stuffed green olives too!

Moroccan oil-cured are my favorite, the wrinkled ugly things.

Kalamatas are amazing, but I'm a huge fan of the black Greek/Turkish ones, not sure of the name...

I'm not a fan of olives, but I do love olive oil!

I too prefer olives in their oil iteration.

I love ALL olives. The more the merrier. Kalamata, Black, Green, Nicoise bring it on! What a beautiful idea & a great opportunity! I would love to showcase this on my site!

arbequina olives are my personal favorites - and not just because they're fun to say! as always, feta makes anything taste better and these two go great together

Blue-cheese stuffed olives, in a dirty vodka martini!

Any olive cured any way, I love them all. I have a small dish every day after work with a glass of wine. or beer. or whatever is available.

Congrats to our winner gargupie, and thank you to everyone who entered. We have notified the lucky new olive oil owner and updated our Contest Winners page.
