Video: Lobster Rolls from Red's Eats on VendrTV
This week, Dan Delaney of VendrTV visits legendary lobster roll stand Red's Eats in Wiscasset, Maine. The meat isn't mixed with mayonnaise or celery like other lobster rolls, but simply piled high onto a buttered, grilled roll, with melted butter on the side. They also serve crab rolls, fried haddock, fried clams, and burgers. Watch the video after the jump.

We were on vacation in that general area a few years ago for a week, and ended up going an hour or so out of our way to Red's two or three times (thanks to the review at hollyeats.com)
Red's has ruined me for other lobster rolls.

I registered for a serious eats account just so i could complain about this over rated, over priced dump. service at red's is outrageously slow, plan on waiting an hour to get to the front of the line, and then another 15 minutes after you order. what takes so long is beyond me, since this the preparation of these lobster rolls should take literally zero time. it's nothing but cold lobster on a roll. period. you could put one together in 5 seconds. while spending your hour plus on the side of a busy road, you better bring bug spray, because it's right on the water and you're pretty much in a mosquito cloud. i wonder how many bugs are breeding on my food inside that poorly constructed shack? better to not think about it. also you better be prepared for sticker shock, since 2 lobster rolls plus fries set me back almost $50, a fair price considering i had to eat sitting in my car. to cap off this horrific food experience, one of the employees of red's yelled at my girlfriend and made her cry (not kidding). completely not worth it for nothing but slightly more lobster than you can get other places.

Well, it looks like a dream.

Hmm...I'm not a big fan of the mayo'd lobster in lobster rolls. But yoyoguy's review makes me think twice.

I remembered this place from the documentary Sandwiches That You Will Like. Sad to hear that "Red" passed away last year.

Boggles my mind that this place gets so much buzz. You go to Red's if you're a tourist and want to stand on line for 45-60 minutes with a bunch of other people who have read about the place in Fodor's or wherever else (I would bet hard cash that there is no other place in New England with a higher concentration of Southern drawls than the line at Red's). Yeah, the rolls have a lot of lobster, but the meat is tough and they don't even chop it up into bite size pieces. The long line is a function of the fact that Red's has the same line for ordering AND serving food, unlike every single other lobster shack in Maine.
If you want a real lobster roll, do yourself a favor and go to Sprague's across the street. Or don't stop in Wiscasset at all and try any of the other awesome lobster rolls on that same part of the coast (Two Lights, Haraseekett Lobster, Brunswick Diner, etc.).

New England style hot dog buns! I hold a special place in my heart for them. Those, and brown bread, and that little piece of bacon fat in the can of baked beans.
