Baked Apple Taste Test

Not all apples are created equal in the oven. If you're new to baking apples and don't want to be left with a pile of unsightly mush, check out NPR's baked apple taste test where they try five different apples. Honeycrisp wins; Granny Smith loses. What's your favorite baking apple?

I don't know if I have a favourite, but I usually use Pink Lady because that is what we have around in the winter months. I like it because of the tart flavour.

Good old fashioned Romes - there's a reason they're known as baking apples.

We had gone apple picking in Georgia last year and found Arkansas Black apples in the orchards; their skin is such a deep red it's almost black. But when baked, they turn a gorgeous shade of deep red with a mellow apple flavor. Definitely my favorite.

My favourite apples are the Fuji ones; not sure how they stand up to baking though.

I adore HoneyCrisp apples out of hand - its the only apple I will eat that way. They used to be my favorite for baking, but this fall I am way into the Golden delicious - has more a traditional apple pie vibe to me.
