In Great Desserts: Apple-Pumpkin Pie
Pumpkin pie: fall standard. Apple pie: ditto. So why not apple pumpkin pie? Alice Summers from the food blog YummyLocal revives a recipe from an Emeril Lagasse Thanksgiving pie contest nearly ten years ago. Cinnamon-stewed apples form the pie's first layer, which gets smothered in a sweet pumpkin filling.
It gets you thinking about pie's fall potential. Pumpkin-pecan? Pecan-cranberry? So many possibilities...

Pumpkin pecan is amazing - a layer of pecan pie on the bottom topped with pumpkin pie. I've never made it - but I had it at a staff meeting once - and then we insisted that our colleague bring it every fall until he retired! His charming wife (and excellent baker) accomodated our wish..... I've never dared make it - I'd eat the whole thing.

the thought of apple and pumpkin together in a pie kind of makes me wanna gnar.
i'd still try it b/c you never know until you do, but the pumpkin-pecan sounds much more appetizing.

I prefer the pie-crumble mashup: apple pie on the bottom with crumble instead of the top crust. Don't think it would work with pumpkin (or other custard) pie, though.

My aunt used to make a pecan pie that had a custard filling, and it was sublime. The pecans were always really well toasted, and the custard wasn't very sweet so it balanced out the pecan syrup.
