Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 89: Will No Thinner Make Me Fatter?
We left New York yesterday, headed for rainy and windy Cape Cod without my trusty scale, Thinner. I believe this is the first time in 89 weeks that I have hit the road without him. I have no excuse, so I'm just putting it out there right now.
The real question that needs to answered be posthaste is this: Will no Thinner make me fatter? Will I use Thinner's absence as an excuse to go crazy, knowing I won't have to face Thinner's wrath until Tuesday? After all, my daily weigh-ins on Thinner, and of course my weekly weigh-ins on this weekly diet post, have functioned as a very effective governor, thwarting my tendency to binge.
You might think I forgot Thinner because I didn't want to face him (and all of you) this morning. After all, we had a monumental New York cheesecake tasting on Wednesday at SE World HQ, which could and might have tipped the scales in fatter's favor. Except it didn't.
The Weigh-In, Sorta
When I got on Thinner yesterday (Thursday) I weighed 216, up a mere pound from last week, so I was well within range of staying even for the week.
Maybe I can do without Thinner for the next three days. If all those blind bites of cheesecake didn't do me in, maybe, just maybe, I have learned to control my binging.
I guess we won't have to wait long to find out. I'll be back at ya next Friday, same time, same scale. I hope knowing that I have to face Thinner and all of you in seven days will govern my eating habits this weekend. That means I have to avoid the siren call of Mrs. Blake's pies. Wish me luck, serious eaters.

I don't think we can live with a Thinner everyday of our lives, so it's good that you're leaving it behind and believe in yourself that you can maintain your diet. Sometimes having a Thinner makes us fixated on just the number and forget other elements. Food should be viewed as a nourishment, not as something evil or forbidden. Enjoy your weekend~

I weigh once a month. That way I don't sabotage myself because I am jumping on and off the scales on a daily basis. Water weight, and other factors account for weight gain and/or loss. And I can tell when I 'feel' heavy. Same with when I 'feel' thinner. The scale is only part of what I do.
If I am two or three sizes smaller, then I know something is going on with the weight in a good way.
Good luck on a weekend without Thinner. Time the two of you had a day or two apart.

I don't think you need an excuse to not lug a scale with you when you travel. Personally, I am highly anti-scale. I once went about 18 months without weighing. When I finally found out how much I weighed again, I'd gained a few pounds but it was almost certainly muscle (evidence being looser clothes + intense weight lifting regiment).
If you're fixating on the scale, you're fixating on numbers. You've learned the habits - how to get healthy foods into your daily routine, how to treat yourself without stuffing yourself. Don't rely on a number to validate that. Yes, it's clean and easy and a good punchline to your updates, but good habits are valid no matter what the scale says. They're part of your life now, not a means to an arbitrary end.

When I stop weighing, it's an excuse to slack off.
Last time I went a month and a half, I gained over 5 pounds. I knew there were a few summer events, and rather than compensate, I just avoided the scale figuring my regular calorie watching would make up for it if I put off weighing long enough. They didn't, I was lying to myself.

Ed, did you start your weightlifting routine yet?
