Video: Cracking Open a Big Egg

20090903-bigegg.jpg

This is what you do if you find a frighteningly big egg laid by one of your hens: film yourself cracking it open and upload your video to YouTube, thus freaking out the rest of the Internet. (Don't worry; it's nothing gross, just unexpected.) Watch the video after the jump.

HAHAHA. i love his deadpan tone.

So i watched this at work without the volume on.... so i dont know if he offers an explanation. While unusual, this isn't some freak-of-nature sort of thing.

Similar to the explanation for the double-yolked eggs, this egg-within-an-egg generally happens with first-time layers, or perhaps the first egg of the laying season. When an egg gets made the yolk, then white are formed and then it moves to the shell gland to get a membrane and shell. Eggs are laid on average, once a day. At the first egg-laying season, the hormones and circadian rhythm (biological "clock" that registers day and night) isn't yet perfectly timed.
This means, the first egg might still be in the shell gland when a second yolk-and-white enter. So... the body produces a single shell that surrounds both of them.
These eggs dont make it into the market for the general public.

it cracks me up that the woman says, "oh, that poor chicken."
that was my thought exactly.

@gastronomeg: me too. of course a woman would understand the trauma of giving birth to something that large!

I loved every second of that!

It's like a fetus in fetu.

Brilliant. I love the little kid voice in the background. "Weird!!!" And the wife's reaction.. "oh, that poor bird"... priceless.

The man sure sports a lot of bling for cracking eggs.

Kind of crazy... you are right, above though... very similar to the double yolk thing.

"The big egg is a lot bigger."

Hahaha. I agree, enblithe. The deadpan tone really makes the video.

Wow. Now I was expecting an abnormal amount of yolks. Double wouldn't be unusual enough so I was thinking 3.

About 1/3 of the eggs my chickens have been laying have been double yolked but so far none have been double eggs. Now I'm sort of worrying about the freakishly big one I hard boiled last night for my batch of pickled eggs.

Imagine if you could market the egg in an egg.

For those that are cash strapped. The new egg squared. By a dozen get a dozen.

Of course it would make for an interesting hard boiled egg.
