New Feature: Comment Notification

Thanks to all our dust making earlier today, all the community features have been turned back on, plus we're pleased to announce a new feature: comment notification! Now, every time you leave a comment on a blog post, talk topic, or Photograzing submission, you'll receive an email notifying you of any new comments on that thread. You'll also be notified of any comments on Talk topics you create or published Photograzing submissions. Handy!

Comment notification is a profile level feature, and by default you'll begin receiving comment notification emails immediately. If you regularly comment on high comment count threads like our weekly Cook the Book giveaways, you may want to disable this feature or create a new email filter in order to avoid the high volume of comment notification emails. If you'd like to turn off comment notification for any reason, here's how:

Follow the link in the top right login box to "edit my account."

From the edit your account page, scroll down to the "comment response notification" section and select "no."

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click "save changes." Done! You can turn this feature on or off at any time.

This is a beta feature, which means we'll be making changes and enhancements based on your feedback.

Note: If you need to change your account email address, email support@seriouseats.com and we'll help you.

Great new feature, but IMHO it should really be on a per-post basis, I in fact dont think I've ever seen it as a global preference—for good reason!

Agreed, this is our first step toward a per-post basis notification system.

Aha.

Also, the emails are a little ghetto right now what with the empty 'Edit' link and the MT tagline—you could always just call it "Beta" ;-)

Anyway, glad to see it!

Um... neat idea... hate to complain, but... is anybody else receiving notifications in spite of having the option set to NO on their profiles?

Just a heads up, Alaina...

@RouxTheDay Thanks for the heads up! It might take up to 20 minutes for the change to take effect, but if you continue to receive these notifications please let me know and we'll investigate further.

uhhh thanks I guess.

oh, btw your login feature is messed up. When I click log in, it takes me to the log in page. Once I enter my info and log in, I'm taken to the main page where then I have to hit the log-in at the top right once again under the "Hello, Eater!" heading to be officially logged in.

I also find at times that when I go to leave a comment it asks me to log in once again!! It's really annoying.

@dre2112 Our browser cookie changed with the upgrade, which is why you are seeing those login issues. If you log out, delete your Serious Eats cookies (here's how) and then log in again it should be smooth sailing.

Mine was set to "no" when I got there. Is this a feature where no means yes and yes means no?

Mine is also set to no--fortunately! I could see this feature being useful on a post-by-post basis, but having it globally set is a nightmare--I would end up never posting if I couldn't turn it off. Well, this post will be a test I get...hopefully I won't be notified of posts in this thread! I won't turn it on until it can be done on an individual post basis.

We've temporarily disabled comment notification sitewide while we troubleshoot the opt-in/out-out issues that have been reported. Thanks for your patience!

my comments are being refused ~ I'm being asked to login even though I am loggedin

@petitesoeur Our browser cookie changed with the upgrade, which is why you are you seeing the issues you described. If you log out, delete your Serious Eats cookies (here's how) and then log in again that should fix it.
