Fluffernutter: Massachusetts' State Sandwich?

20090925-fluffernuttersandwich.jpg

It's good to hear that the Massachusetts legislature has its priorities straight. The Fluffernutter sandwich (marshmallow Fluff plus peanut butter) may become the state's official sandwich. According to the Boston Globe, it's one of three foods, along with Necco Wafers and the Charleston Chew candy bar, that will be considered for official state status by a legislative committee tomorrow.

As a Californian, this got me thinking—what would our state sandwich be? Avocado with sprouts on seven-grain bread? And what sandwich would best represent your state?

NC- definitely a homemade pimento cheese sandwich-- made with Duke's Mayo

or a homegrown tomato sandwich -- with Duke's Mayo :)

..see a trend here?

What!? California's state sandwich should be the French Dip!

Michigan ... probably fish, likely walleye or perch, maybe trout, or even salmon. Whitefish are plentiful in Lake Superior, so that's also a possibility.

Maryland's state sandwich would be a crab cake... sandwich :)

My daily breakfast growing up was toast with peanut butter and sliced banana, but occasionally with marshmallow fluff too. Nothing better (although it was pretty sloppy with the fluff, because the bananas slid off)

Vermont's state sandwich is probably toasted cheese with cheddar and smoked ham.

South Carolina would have pulled pork with mustard sauce.
But, since I've moved to California, I'd have thought the burrito would be the state sandwich. You could put avocado and sprouts in your burrito. I guess.

NYS- has to be pastrami on rye in honor of all the great NY deli's

Okay all you Louisiana Serious Eaters out there (and I'm betting there a quite a few) -- I'm thinking either the muffuletta or the fried oyster poboy?

Florida = Cuban sandwich

Haha, my boyfriend is from Mass, and you should hear him wax lyrical about Peanut Butter and Fluff. According to him, his childhood diet was a steady stream of PB & Fluff and cold cereal. He credits all his success in life to this. He says the combination may not be all that original, it's getting the ratio right that's the tricky part. His biggest success to date, you ask? Me. ;)

NJ: Taylor ham sandwich...or, italian peppers and sausage sandwich...

The hamburger should be California's state sandwich. McDonalds and In-N-Out, among others, both started in Califorina. Plus it would be cool to stick it to Connecticut and Texas, who both claim to be where the hamburger was invented. It might have been invented there, but it was perfected here. Let the flames begin!

I HATE to say this....for PA....probably the Cheesesteak. I mean think about it, everywhere you go somebody has a different version of it....but Philly is the original.

Oklahoma: Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich.

Although I live in Michigan, my philadelphian grandma used to always make these for us! Great memories.

Great site! Check out our blogspot - dogsontheroad for all you hot dog connoisseurs

Hmmmm... NH would have to be squirrel with maple syrup on wonder bread cooked open faced ( cause we're top shelf here)on the exhaust manifold...

I'm a New Yorker... obviously, pastrami on rye. With deli-style mustard.

NJ: high brow: Bobolink farm cheese + Jersey tomatoes. Low-brow: anything you can find at the Grease Trucks.

NM: A green chile cheeseburger.

I never realized that fluff was a regional delicacy until last year. My mom never let me eat fluff...the BF introduced me to it and I ate about 2 a day for a while.

I think the state sandwich for VT would be turkey, cheddar, green apple, and honey mustard on some whole grain bread.

NJ: Italian Hot dog.

Wait, Necco Wafers, really? Massachusetts: The Commonwealth of the Halloween Candy No One Will Trade For.

Hey, Carolyn, I happen to love Necco Wafers, especially the chocolate ones. If nothing else, they make good roofing shingles on gingerbread houses.

WA, despite what you've heard about Starbucks and ubiquitous drive-up huts featuring topless "baristas," if that's what you want to call them, has more teriyaki/Asian cafes per capita than coffeeshops. I think the state sandwich would be sweet and sour steelhead trout or salmon teriyaki on a sourdough roll sprinkled with chopped weed from Vancouver, Canada.

Our state candy is Almond Roca, which was born in Tacoma. Yum!

Our state spread? Apple butter or apple jelly.

The first thing I thought of was Oreo for Ohio.

French dip is a great candidate for the California sandwich, but I feel like our sandwich ought to have avocado on it. Turkey and avocado maybe?

The official sandwich of Missouri should be the burnt ends sandwich. (Arthur Bryants is on our side kansas!)

NJ: Pork roll, egg, and cheese on a roll. Sounds soooo good right now.

Ca- what about an Its-it! But French Dip is more realistic

The state sandwich of Texas would have to be a sliced or chopped brisket sandwich on white bread topped with pickles, onions, and good BBQ sauce.

Alabama would have to be the Alabama Steak Sandwich - fried bologna with cheddar cheese.

Kentucky actually has an official state (or commonwealth) sandwich - the Hot Brown. Wikipedia "A Hot Brown is a hot sandwich originally created at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, by Fred K. Schmidt in 1926. It was one of two signature sandwiches created by chefs at the Brown Hotel shortly after its founding in 1923. It was created to serve as an alternative to ham and egg late-night suppers.

"The Hot Brown is an open-faced sandwich of turkey and bacon, covered in Mornay sauce and baked or broiled until the bread is crisp and the sauce begins to brown."

TN - Roadkill...with slice of tomato and Benton's bacon, of course.

TN - Ok seriously...I can't decide. There's barbecue in West Tennessee and Hot Chicken in Middle Tennessee, but I wonder if we couldn't do an opened faced sandwich from East Tennessee for some Appalachian love?...White beans over cornbread with a scoop of chow chow. Yes!

Arkansas - a fried catfish sandwich! Mmmm, just fried catfish and bread. And maybe lettuce and hot sauce for you fancy folks out there.

@ Pavlov: Squirrel? Exhaust manifold? Ouch! We are sooooo not redneck! (even in the upper part of the state!) For our state sandwich, I nominate a crepe with apples and maple syrup -- taking influence from New England and our neighbors to the north, and of course from the Silver Moon Creperie in Dover (who deserves more credit than they receive).

Wait, fluffernutters are regional? What did your mom give you as a "special treat" version of PBJ when you were a kid? I feel very sad for the rest of the country, suddenly.

I think I must be the only person in the state of Massachussetts that detests marshmallow fluff. Perhaps I should lobby my local representative to introduce a competing bill with roast beef as a candidate for state sandwich.

Yeah, pastrami on rye is a great sammie, but it hardly represents the state of NY; heck, it only represents a swath of the city! When I'm at Katz's, it's a Reuben for me and mine, and we ain't the only ones noshing on those non-kosher entries...No, to stand as a STATE candidate, the choice must be more ubiquitous, and I'm throwing my support to the grilled cheese for the Empire State--but maybe only 'cause no one here has yet claimed it. It I wanted a civil war, I'd nominate the beef on 'weck. Anybody wanna fight?

@ ilovebutter...I guess perhaps youre right... we are from God's country... If God was from a land of toothless circus freaks!

(we are just a little redneck here, and in case you hadn't heard "it's alright to be a redneck")

Of course I was kidding, raised in NH and am damn proud of my state, but a crepe?! I'll give you the maple, either maple butter or syrup... but definitely not a damned crepe. Perhaps a maple glazed donut before a crepe. (but neither are a sandwich)

How about curried oysters with dried cranberries and diced granny smith apple on hearty sourdough?

ALABAMA- That would definitely have to be a Chicken Biscuit.... Damn I love those things!

NECCO wafers rule, especially now that they come in the little halloween pkgs (The standard roll is about 4 inches long, the Halloween's 1 inch). So handy to bring somewhere for a little something sweet, and they never, ever spoil. The flavors are distinctive and clean (my favorites are licorice and lime) Good glove compartment food. And, as betteirene points out, great for roofing tiles.

What, Massachusetts doesn't have a state cookie? Should be the toll house, of course. I love that they're considering the number 6 as the state number.

I grew up in MA and on Fluffernutters. They just make me so happy, even today.
Now that I'm in GA, I'd say the state sandwich down here should be a chicken biscuit from Chik-fil-A.

Illinois - Italian Beef!

Grew up in IL, and I'm torn between Gyros, Italian Beef (dipped of course) or maybe even the classic Chicago dog.

I'm from NJ, and have never had (nor never will injest) a Taylor Pork Roll. I think that is a South Jersey thing.

My votes for NJ: A Boardwalk hot dog from the Windmill (mustard, relish or sauerkraut), a buttered roll; or a really good Italian sub

Maine - lobster roll with potato chips and blueberry pie.

I'll go ahead and grab the grilled cheese for Ohio. Nice, plain, middle-american fare.
If not the grilled cheese then definitely the cheese-coney (I'm looking at you Cinci)

I'm with the other Texan out there (Sweet E), a chopped beef sandwich all the way (that's chopped BBQ brisket drenched in BBQ sauce for all of those out there not in the know).

Raised in CT, but I live in Massachusetts now, and I've STILL never had a fluffernutter sandwich. I love peanut butter sandwiches (and, occasionally, pb&j), but fluff really doesn't appeal to me. It just looks so sticky and overly sweet. Maybe it's because I hate marshmallows?

The other Texans have beat me to saying brisket. :) But it's rather iconic, and you can find it all across the state, so it makes sense.

Even though I've never had one, I must agree that NJ's official sandwich should be Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a hard roll. They're ubiquitous here, but don't exist anywhere else.

@maybert:
What about the bbq sandwhich for NC? BBQ w/ vinegar sauce & slaw on a bun...yum

I am originally from California and I agree avocado has to be on any sandwich from there. But I really love French Dips!

I now live in Raleigh, NC and I agree with both on the mater sandwich with Duke's mayo and/or homemade pimento cheese on white bread as well as a really good pulled pork sandwich on a bun with slaw. Hold the sauce
as my tummy won't take it.

And I will chime in on the Necco wafers as well, I like the chocolate ones the best and they are the hardest to find!

I was going to say that New Mexico's should be the Albuquerque Turkey (turkey, jack cheese, and green chile) until I saw a green chile cheeseburger further up in the comments.

Florida: Blackened grouper.

I'm from MA and I can say this is probably the best decision the legislature has made in a very long time. I also love it because it is just so wonderfully politically incorrect. Just think some places would want to tax it. Of course, since the state is almost bankrupt, that may be next.

PA = cheesesteak.

I feel that the state sandwich for Massachusetts should be a meatball sub.

West Virginia is the pepperoni roll, first made for miners as an easy to carry and eat lunch.
