Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby Renamed 'Hubby Hubby' in Support of Gay Marriage
The folks at Vermont-based ice cream–maker Ben & Jerry's have renamed their signature Chubby Hubby flavor "Hubby Hubby" to mark today's enactment of the state's new law that allows same-sex marriage.
A Hubby Hubby sundae will be available in Vermont Ben & Jerry's scoop shops during the month of September.
The Chubby Hubby packaging in grocery stores nationwide will remain unchanged and as heteronormative as ever.
Lesbians, sorry: No "Wifey Wifey" for you.

This is great, too bad it won't be available everywhere.
When they legalize marijuana, Ben and Jerry's will have to introduce a whole new line of flavors. Wait, never mind, they'll just keep the ones they have actually.
JudgeFudge at 11:30AM on 09/01/09
As if I didn't adore them enough already.
LHSK12 at 11:34AM on 09/01/09
Ben & Jerry's--probably the coolest corporation in the whole entire world. They make me smile :)
betteirene at 11:39AM on 09/01/09

That's awesome.
arm1970 at 12:13PM on 09/01/09
hilarious :)
also, i don't know if "heteronormative" is really a word, but i don't care b/c i love it!
gastronomeg at 12:19PM on 09/01/09
clever. Wonder if they'll do this in other states too- Iowa maybe? Also, heteronormative is absolutely a word- can't recall who coined it, but it's been in use for probably 30 years or more.
thatgrrl at 12:32PM on 09/01/09
Awesome. I wonder what would happen if they market it in the red states? 'What do I hate more? Gays celebrating their love, or me not getting my favourite ice cream?'
NotAmerican at 12:41PM on 09/01/09
love it!
kristin314 at 1:08PM on 09/01/09
Love it, and the flavour sounds awesome too never seen it here in the UK

foodinmouth at 3:11PM on 09/01/09
I love that, I just wish they would do it nationally.
emgroff at 3:25PM on 09/01/09
Are they sending any of the profits to gay rights campaigns or is it just PR?
lyricanjl at 4:24PM on 09/01/09
Okay, whatever.

borrais at 10:53PM on 09/01/09
I'd prefer my food not come with some sort of political agenda. I'll stick with using my ice cream maker.
FryPrayEatPassOut at 11:22PM on 09/01/09
I prefer my food with political agenda when it fits my own. Pass the tub of hubby hubby!
marchpane at 11:45PM on 09/01/09
They can call it whatever they want, but they need to restore the supply here in The Natural State of Arkansas, Blue State or not. I blame Howard Dean.
scotter at 12:44AM on 09/02/09
doesn't all food come with SOME sort of political agenda? even the ingredients you put in your ice cream maker.
what about a flavor for the gals marrying gals?
dmarina at 2:38PM on 09/02/09
Ben and Jerry's How do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
1) You make awesome ice cream
2) You make awesome ice cream with fun names
3) You have a social concious
4) You make awesome ice cream
5) You celebrate equality and tolerence by renaming one of your already cleverly named awesome ice cream with another clever name
6) You make awesome ice cream
and @ chefparker - Very disappointing to see that kind of language on this forum. You are entitled to your own opinion but there is no reason to drag things into the gutter in order to express it.
Martini Me at 4:01PM on 09/02/09
Ah, yet another sign that our country is going down the crapper. What's next, an ice cream for illegal immigrants called "Rio Wet Dreams". Let's just cater to every deviant group out there. So glad there's not a B & J in my area. I get enough liberal propaganda from NBC.
Conservative at 1:12PM on 09/03/09
@ emgroff : B & J doesn't have the b***s to do it nationally. They have to stick to the areas where there liberal blah, blah, blah is accepted. Kind of an indicator that this liberal and socialistic agenda our dictator is pushing isn't gonna fly. Hmmmm.
P.S. I know this should be a simple article about ice cream, but when you are in the public spotlight and choose to deliberately market a product that is political, then you open yourself to criticism. And to show how much more class Conservatives have, you don't see us picketing and boycotting B & J's and trying to put them out of business. Double standards are alive and well!
Conservative at 1:32PM on 09/03/09
Well, at last the little sweeties will have something to lick off in their name! Disgusting! As Americans, we need to get back to our original roots and stop all this political BS by recognizing each and every group that whines to be identified. Do what you want behind closed doors, but don't shove it in our straight faces (no pun intended). Did you ever think we straight folks just might be offended by this crap???? I'm certainly glad I have never lined the pockets of the B&J corporation; and, now certainly NEVER will!
americanpatriot at 2:44PM on 09/03/09
Ok, fudge covered pretzels? Genius.
lambowner at 4:07PM on 09/04/09
the product should be called " MY HUBBY GIVES ME A CHUBBY" OR " HUBBY AND CHUBBY / FUDGE"
thomp at 7:55PM on 09/04/09
Does it cum in pints, quarts or half gallons?
dmcavanagh at 12:55AM on 09/05/09
Does it cum in pints, quarts or half gallons?
dmcavanagh at 12:57AM on 09/05/09
@ conservative- well said! Looks like we might be the minority here.... we don't buy B&J's anyhow, so no love lost.
mhurst826 at 7:06PM on 09/05/09
chubby hubby has always been my favorite flavor. I grew up in vermont, and when I moved to louisiana I was so disappointed to find that by the time it gets down here, the pretzels aren't crispy anymore.
I usually dont care for food with a political agenda, but ben and jerry's is an exception. I love them anyways.
delilah at 4:32AM on 09/06/09
LOL at "conservatives" bothered by a gay-friendly ice cream flavor. I'm sure you could petition Turkey Hill to make a special edition; "Butter-brickle-bigot" seems catchy.
Doctrine at 6:42PM on 09/06/09
Love it, and how about adding another conservative fave................."Breyers Criers" special editon :)
jackie2830 at 9:40AM on 09/07/09
The thought of gay marriage disgusts me and would definitely make me not want to eat the ice cream named after it
pebe98 at 9:44AM on 09/07/09
Better flavor for Republicans: Breyer's closeted-homo crunch.
Doctrine at 11:09AM on 09/07/09
What a totally awesome thing to do!!!!
I fully support it.
Obviously the people who are complaining have their own issues.
Everyone is the same. The only thing different is who they sleep with & that is behind closed doors so it is none of my business. A person is a person, it doesn't matter who they love, let them love whoever, how does it effect you? It doesn't so let it go.
I say more "Hubby, Hubby" in the world
&
my family (including my husband!) will buy it & support it.
I
mkw70 at 12:09PM on 09/07/09
I think it's supportive in a meaningless way...they aren't changing it anywhere but that state and the only people outside vermont that will ever know are the ones that have read this article.
domesticdiva at 1:21PM on 09/07/09
Hubby-Hubby....wow, just not the mental image I want while enjoying ice cream. Sorry, BJ, no pun intended, but I won't be buying your ice cream anymore. Its good, but theres better ice cream out there that doesn't shove personal politics down my throat, literally. Its funny how liberals claim to be "open-minded", when in reality the only thing they are open to is their own liberal opinions...so no one is truly open-minded.
gramlee at 4:19PM on 09/07/09
How sad that such a small gesture to once again be inclusive to all has so many people, for whatever reason, so angry. These are the same conservatives who are so worried about the elected President of the United States speaking to our kids to tell them to work hard and stay in school they want to refuse everybody's kids the right to see him. I let my child listen to Nancy Reagan with her "Just Say NO" campaign. Thank you Ben and Jerry's. I for one, have always been a fan and now am even more of a fan. I hope all those who are so anti gay never have a child that is homosexual-who are you to tell others how to live their life?
bigmama at 5:15PM on 09/07/09
How is this any different from people eating In N Out burgers that are wrapped in bible verses? or Chik Fil-A who discriminate, er, screens employees based on their religious beliefs in order to create a Christian workforce?
Give me a freakin' break. All of these companies have an agenda. If you're gonna boycott any company that expresses their views and beliefs, you'll end up a very busy home cook.
oh_no_eric at 5:33PM on 09/07/09
Hey Gramlee (and the other morons), denying people the right to marry based on gender isn't a conservative or liberal position. It's a bigoted reaction based on religious nonsense. It is completely indefensible by any rational person, especially a REAL conservative.
Doctrine at 6:32PM on 09/07/09
All this Pro Gay and Anti gay ice cream talk has me so excited I want to hand pack some fudge and slurp up some smooth vanilla cream and lick that great big spoon. What ,what I say. Ice cream is ice cream isn't it? I'm waiting for Ben and Jerry's pro abortion flavor- it's what ? Bloody what? Baby what?
jfitz at 9:00PM on 09/07/09
That is TOTALLY DISGUSTING!!!!
Such support shows a total lack of morality.
I don't buy Ben and Jerry's, I certainly will not now.
If you ignore Natures (or I should say God's) laws you are on the road to destruction. Such is the case with the homosexual community. Emotional illness causes them to behave unnatually. Supporting this unnatural activity is as wholesome as pushing tainted twinkies.
Maybe there is a connection there???
haglered at 9:26PM on 09/07/09
Such a shame people are still so backwards in this country. Nasty, nasty comments make me sad. Oh well, more ice cream for us non-bigots then! :D
VerySmallAnna at 10:03PM on 09/07/09
When I buy ice cream, I am not out to support a politcal agenda, I want to satisfy my sweet tooth.
hmgreen616 at 10:57PM on 09/07/09
All these companies may have an agenda...and when they make their agenda obvious, it is then my right to no longer buy their product if I choose not to. At least I still have that right, but maybe not much longer with the current administrations communist agenda. And Doctrine....I'm a "moron" because my opinion differs from yours? Hmm I thought liberals were supposed to be open-minded?? I guess not! Oh I forgot, its okay to hate on white christians...just not any other group, such as gays. To base an opinion on "religous nonsense"...very cliche response to anyone opposing gay marriage. All opinions are based on some source within your mind...who is to say a religous source is any more "nonsensical" than a non-religous source. All opinions are just that--opinions....with none being truly right or wrong in nature. But most peoples minds cannot comprehend that, its comical really lol
gramlee at 12:43AM on 09/08/09
No gramlee, you're a moron because you base your decisions on a collection of fairy tales. Of course it's your prerogative to buy or not buy a product; just as it's our choice to point and laugh when you make a fool of yourself in a public forum. You deserve as much respect as someone who claims the world is flat.
Doctrine at 8:17AM on 09/08/09
aw, Haglered, it's so good to meet people like you. What amazes me about Christians is just how JUDGEMENTAL (hmm...mental?) most of you are. Isn't God supposed to be the one true judge?
By the way, I'm a lesbian (married in Connecticut about two weeks after it was legalized), and I'm also a catholic. And God loves me just as much as he loves you. Remember, we are ALL God's children.
italiagirl84 at 8:55AM on 09/08/09
oh_no_eric--EXACTLY. I could not agree with you more!!!!!!!!!!

OK. It's clear this thread is going nowhere fast and has run its course. Closing comments now, as it's going to be more of the same from here on out.
