Zooey Deschanel Guest Judges on 'Top Chef Masters' Tonight

20090804-zooeydeschanel.jpgThe songstress-actress Zooey Deschanel is a gluten-intolerant vegan who doesn't eat soy. On tonight's episode of Top Chef Masters, cheftestants will have to prepare a lunch for her and friends. "I love her. Loved her in Elf," said chef Art Smith before hearing about her nightmarish dietary restrictions.

So in other words she and her friends will be eating grass...

Wow, a gluten-intolerant vegan... I hope she has a private chef AND a nutritionist. That sounds like torture.

Nightmarish? Really? I can't very much wheat or I get migraines (I certainly can't eat it daily), and I also don't eat eggs, dairy or meat. It's easier than you might think.

Wow. No soy either? Not to knock her choices (certainly if some of it is because of a legitimate digestive intolerance), but what happens for someone who also has a real problem digesting beans? Do you live on Beano? Where else do you get your protein from? I'm asking this in all seriousness. Last year I tried cutting more meat out of my diet and after a week of limiting tofu in favor of more beans, I was...a bit of an environmental hazard...if you get my meaning...

As my Brit-Irish Dah would have said "Let's go for a big feed !"

@Amandarama - I think most people adjust to beans if they introduce them slowly ... and some are gentler on the stomach than others (dal with ginger's pretty easy on the stomach). All foods contain some protein, and she can still eat nuts and seeds. Burmese tofu is traditionally soy-free (its made with chickpeas), so maybe she eats that?

@KarynMC - Burmese tofu? Thanks, I will have to look into that. Dal has mixed results here in our house - I'm usually ok with it, but BF sometimes is not. I guess I'll just have to keep experimenting :) Thank you for the reminder on the nuts and seeds (which tend to be more of a snack around here, but could maybe find more of a way onto the dinner plate).

It doesn't seem like that much of a big deal to me. I loved Michael Chiarello's comment though - something like, "Imagine you can't cook any of the foods you love...BWAH!" (Maybe I imagined the "BWAH.")

what do zooey deschanel's choices have to do with someone who can't digest beans?

i mean, the hypothetical person you are building isn't zooey deschanel, so how is that vegan? a person allergic to beans/gluten might choose not to be vegan. what if they were allergic to beans, and nuts, and gluten, and chicken, and eggs and dairy, and didn't want to eat meat? that's their business. it's not like zooey deschanel has said no one has an excuse not to be vegan.

the vegan question is really, what if you don't have any allergies or intolerances? then you need a reason not to be vegan. (which of course, people still have).

and really, it's rare that someone would be allergic to all those things. taking any individual thing out, gluten, or soy, or nuts, isn't a problem at all. and again, no one is passing anti-meat laws, so folks who are allergic too all of that still have choices.

there still do exist these FABulous things called vegetables...
just saying!

I'll gladly have her over for beer & carrot sticks!

tinytim - Beer has gluten. Lots of it. The carrot sticks will be okay, though.

brownie- This mission is looking impossible!
Oh the humanity!

Sounds like a very sad diet. Gotta stay skinny in Hollywood!

Lame bitch, lame diet.

Wow. I'm shocked at the rudeness of some of these comments.

Wow, being gluten intolerant and not eating soy would really cut into my own vegan diet. I'm sure , though, that like most vegans she focuses on the delicious things she can eat and not all the junk that she can not - and that's what the chefs have to do too.
