Watch It With Us: 'Top Chef Masters,' Episode 10, the Season Finale

20090819-tcm.jpg

Wow. A lot of Top Chef tonight. Such a weird double-header—the Top Chef Masters finale tonight almost seems anti-climactic after the season premiere of original Top Chef. I'm guessing a lot of you are sticking around to watch Chiarello, Bayless, and Keller battle it out for the win, though. If you are, join us here in the comments at 10:15 p.m. ET. It'll be an open thread—jump in with your observations or play-by-play as the episode unfolds. If you haven't read the infamous spoiler, who do you think's gonna take it? All five Top Chef champs will serve as guest judges. [Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not scroll past any comments past 11 p.m.]

Weird indeed--did they move up the premier of Top Chef? I swear I had previously seen it advertised as the 26th.

i was dying to comment throughout the las vegas top chef! c'moooon. oh well, i'm ready now for top chef masters i suppose

@brookes: Yeah. I thought I had seen that, too. The Los Angeles Times, among others, reported it was starting on the 26th.

I just realized I haven't eaten dinner yet. And I've let my pantry fall to dangerously low levels. All this Top Chef is killing me. :/

Kelly, such a letdown after Padma...

haha kelly IS such a letdown after padma, youre quite right carey jones

Goddamn it, I want a thousand bucks to spend at Whole Foods.

A thousand bucks a Whole Foods... What are you gonna buy, a head of lettuce?

A thousand bucks at Whole Foods... What are you gonna buy, a head of lettuce? HA!

Damned blackberry! Either that or fat thumbs!

You boys can have your thousand bucks at WF. I want dinner with Tom.

Oh. I like this "autobiographical meal." Four dishes, each should be inspired by:

1) Chefs' first food memory
2) Experience that made them decide to become a chef
3) The opening of their first restaurant
4) Where they'll be heading in the future

I'm adapting that here ...

My first food memory: Eating kolache cookies that my paternal grandmother used to make. Which reminds me, I should see if my parents have the recipe—I remember they made them once and then said NEVER AGAIN, because it was apparently too involved. If not, I suppose her version died with her.

Experience that made me become a foodo: Having to cook for myself in college. It was one of the things I was good at, and I realized that (some*) chicks dig it.

First dinner party: Since I haven't opened a restaurant and probably never will, my closest experience is cooking for a crowd. That would probably be my first "Breakfast of Champions Brunch" (d'oh! Make that my first brunchparty), which I hosted in 2000 after moving to Brooklyn. It coincided with the NYC Marathon, whose route went right past my building. I made bagels from scratch, trays and trays of a make-ahead baked French toast, and had a mimosas and bloody mary bar.

Future: Oh, who knows. Right now, the most ambitious thing I have going on is trying to cook at home more than I now do. My kitchen now is abysmal and not super inspiring as far as cooking goes. I'm looking forward to fall, when I can start using my new Dutch oven for hearty roasts, stews, and casseroles.

*At least the kind I like.

Mmmmmmmm... Baby pig, soooo porky!

Wow! Love these old pics of Bayless. NERD NERD NERD

hahah i liked the old pics of hubert with his big black beard,

my boyfriend and i have a bet between bayless and hubert. me? bayless. him? hubert. good thing i only bet a dollar

Worried about Bayless and his seafood. I hope he pulls it together, though. Certainly don't want Smarmy Chiarello to win.

Rocky's trainer? I don't think anyone would want to see Mickey Goldmill in the ring righting with Rocky Balboa or Rocky Marciano.

There are two Rockys?

alright this isn't related, but did anyone else have an instant hatred for that mike isabella guy on top chef las vegas?

@ Adam: LMAO at NERD NERD NERD.

Was he the one who didn't know what seitan is?

@ cheesebreadbutter YES! My friend and I are watching in Boston right now, and both of us wanted him gone...immediately.

@cheesebreadbutter: yes.

The longer these meals go on, the more apparent it is that these judges are drinking...

First food memory (first time I understood the power of food)- watching my mom make spaghetti sauce all day long and finally understanding why all my friends wanted to come over everytime we had spaghetti.

Experience that made me want to be a chef- 6 yrs old and scorching to the point of ruin 2 of my mothers sauce pans trying to make chocolate pudding, and not getting a spanking. Instead, she helped me make pudding the right way and then eating the finished product!

First dinner party- I was in my late teens and I made stuffed chicken breasts risotto and spicy greens.

What I hope to do- get back into food in a way I could enjoy and make a living at, without hating to wake up in the morning.

@missvenuz: Just watched Revenge of the Nerds last week. ;)

@Adam I go to the U of A, where RotN was filmed. Go Cats!

Anyone else tired of Chiarello talking about telling stories?

"Was there a sale on truffles?" BURN

@missvenuz: Wasn't Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School also filmed there?

@Adam No. That was filmed at UWisc-Madison.

@professorchaos - yes! he was the one who didn't know who seitan was! and i hate him for saying that he 'had to beat a girl' (even though i'm biased and that girl is a chef from philly whom i'm rooting for to win!)

Yep, he's a pig. Which means he'll probably stick around for awhile.

YAY BAYLESS!!!!!

WOOOO! I JUST WON TWO DOLLARS!

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

Hubert should just give the rest of that truffle to his foundation, it's probably more than Rick's winnings.

The only thing that bothers me about this is that Mike You Can't Pronounce My Name came in ahead of the infinitely more talented and humane Who--Bert.

Of course!

Ah, so that's why Rick has been so friendly lately.

I am so happy that Rick Bayless won! :)

Awesome finale! No silly "twists" or gimmicks to screw it up. Gave them plenty of time and money to cook a fantastic dinner, and it looked like all three delivered. Loved it!

I want to got to Chicago so I can try to eat at Bayless' place.

Booyah. Rick Bayless is so awesome.
