Scientists Say Popcorn Is Good For You

20090819-popcorn-thumb.jpgFindings presented at yesterday's American Chemical Society's annual meeting said that popcorn might be good for you because they have been found to contain large amounts of polyphenols, antioxidants that are known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Will the polyphenols counteract the effects of sitting in the movie theater, eating the popcorn instead of exercising?

Things be praised! I will be at the bar tonight eating free popcorn and drinking beer!

It also makes you very popular in the office. Just pop a bag in the breakroom and see what happens.

@lippy: oh we can dream :)

"Notable "sources of polyphenols include several types of berries, tea, beer (yes!), grapes/wine, olive oil, chocolate/cocoa, coffee, walnuts, peanuts, pomegranates, yerba maté, and several other fruits and vegetables.

Its important to know that these "notable" sources of the polys also provide additional nutritional value besides their antioxidant benefits--but not so with popped corn.

I guess this might be a reason not to feel SO GUILTY about eating poporn haha

I heart popcorn. This is just another excuse to eat it

As a scientist I can tell you that is a bit of a stretch, but if you enjoy popcorn there's no reason not to eat it in reasonable quantities. I like to pop mine myself and use creative spices and toppings.

I make my own popcorn at home too. It is sooo good with a little sprinkle of salt and sugar. Instant kettle corn!

so - it's not great for you, but it's not terrible either? i like to indulge in a bowl of it .... with a little olive oil and sea salt.... every now and again.

I choose to believe that popcorn has amazing health benefits, especially when popped at home in a bit of peanut oil and tossed with flaked fleur de sel, and then devoured in large quantities. I will believe this no matter what science exists to prove otherwise.
