Popcorn: Do You Err on the Side of Unpopped or Burnt?

I have an irrational fear of burnt popcorn. A single black, acrid kernel ruins an entire bag of microwave popcorn for me; even after tossing out the scorched parts, I can't get the smell (or the memory) out of my head. So I usually stop the microwave at the very first sign of a popping slowdown... and end up with a bag half-full of kernels. It's occurred to me that I could get a lot more popcorn if I gave it a few seconds longer, but I'm just not willing to take the risk.

A few friends think I'm crazy. "Just let it pop!" I've been told. But no—I'd rather unpopped kernels than burnt ones. Of course, it'd be better to have neither. But popping isn't an exact science.

What about you? Do you err on the side of unpopped or burnt?

my grandfather ALWAYS burnt the popcorn and i stayed with him most days in the summer when i was little. we'd eat it and watch Tom and Jerry... so now the smell of burnt popcorn is a happy memory :) im also partial to the half popped kernels... so i guess im on both sides?

Unpopped. Would rather have a bunch of kernels in the bottom of the bowl than fill the house with the smell of burnt popcorn.

I stop popping mine early on purpose because I think the unpopped kernels are wildly delicious...

Err on unpopped side.

Hate burnt popcorn.

Unpopped. Burnt popcorn permeates the whole batch, and makes it inedible to me. And then there's that smeeeelllll....

UNPOPPED! it takes way tooo long to get the smell of burnt popcorn out of my nose and the kitchen.

Please always err on the side of UNPOPPED. I am a dorm mother and I can't how many times I have had to meet the fireman at the dorm door and say, "Microwave popcorn". And when you live in a dorm they send EVERY truck! Plus it smells like hell for days.

Haven't eaten popcorn in nearly a decade, but definitely unpopped. Acrid burnt popcorn? Not on my watch

I err on the side of Unpopped, and I love the half popped kernels!

I'd say unpopped, but honestly, I've started popping corn in a pot on the stove again, and not only do I find it to tastemuch better than microwave, I also only have very few unpopped kernels left, and never burn. Now the butter, that I (almost) burn before pouring it on, yum!

Unpopped doesn't stink NEARLY as much as burnt. I'm not that cheap that I won't sacrifice 10 or 15 kernels in the interest of not having to deal with that stench for a day.

I use an air popper - no burnt, and very few unpopped kernels.

err on the side of unpopped. its easier to discard kernels than smell burnt popcorn.

I air pop! So I go with "popcorn flying around the kitchen."

Unpopped. Carbon is so gross.

I'm not a popcorn fan, but on the rare occasion that I want it, I like it on the well-done side. I like that little bit of burnt flavor. It's best when the half-pops burn a little.

I wait until it's 2 seconds between pops and turn off the microwave. It's gotten to the point where I will try to err on the unpopped side of the equation. I've smelled so much burnt popcorn at every office I've worked in that I don't want that at home.

Anyway really, but I prefer it on the burnt side....weird I know.

Hello? Airpopper! Then you control the butter.

It's easier to control your popcorn popping if you make in on the stovetop. Tastes better and no yucky chemical additives.

I like my popcorn made on the stove, with just the slightest hint of "burniness". The smell of microwave popcorn makes me gag, and it is even worse when burned.

I make mine in a bakery bag or brown bag and then in the microwave. I like to think it's more on the well, natural side... I USED to think nobody liked burnt popcorn, but I guess I was wrong! I am an unpopper myself, but not entirely on purpose, I always end up with those kernels at the end.

Slightly unpopped. Once you hear the popping kernels start to diminish popping (if you don't hear a pop for 2 seconds then remove the bag) and you're good to go. My kids then will top with grated cheese or extra butter and sea salt.
Gotta say though, pan popped on the stove rules.

Add me to the "weird" list. I like mine slightly burnt. I haven't a clue where I developed that peccadillo, as I can't tolerate any other food that's overcooked.

unpopped!!!

BURNT I make my popcorn on the stove, and I would much rather pick out one or two burnt bits (a rare occurrence) than see a bunch of shiny unpopped kernels on top of my fluffy popcorn when I dump it into a bowl. Shaking the bowl doesn't always sink those kernels, and I like to eat my popcorn by the spoonful. The worst part of my night is sinking my teeth into soft popcorn and then ricocheting off a hard kernel.

I pop kernels on the stove--it's delicious and healthier and you can control your own salt/flavor :)

Popcorn popped on the stove top is best, but if using microwave corn, I err towards unpopped.

Unpopped. The smell of burnt kernels overpowers the properly popped ones, ruins the experience.

That's microwaved at the moment. Want to get a popper again, as non-microwave tastes better (I always end up adding more butter -- REAL butter -- post-pop anyway) but I suck at doing it on the stove.

stove top or air popper. Never burnt that way. Have learned that on the stove can even add a little sugar to the oil and have the taste of kettle corn.

I have been making popcorn ever since I could reach the microwave. I always have cooked it a bit longer because it tastes better that way. I err on the side of burnt but I have never burned popcorn. Its got to be hard because there is a lot of leeway in the microwave. I would understand burning, say, a jiffy pop but a microwave bag? Thats just poor judgment

mcboomofdoom, it's not necessarily poor judgement. i live in the uk and my microwave is *tiny* - the bag's too big to fit in the oven properly when almost fully popped and if i don't watch it carefully it will burn.

i always err on the side of unpopped. and i love the half popped kernals too!

I err on the side of not eating popcorn.

With Jiffy Pop, there was always a mix of burned, perfect, and unpopped kernels. And microwave popcorn is foul. Like some of the posters, I was in a common living scenario (a camp counselor) and smelled so much burnt carcinogenic microwave popcorn it killed my taste for the stuff.

I never make microwave popcorn. It tastes terrible. And I've perfected my stove top popcorn to the point where I get few unpopped kernels (depending on the quality and age of the corn itself) and am surprised and upset when it is burnt! BTW if you are making stove top popcorn the ONLY way to do it is with coconut oil!

I also live in the UK, and it's quite difficult to even find popcorn. Also, when you do find it (usually at the cinema) you have to choose between salty and sweet. And no butter.

We have a bizarre petrol station near us that stocks American food...that's the only place I can get proper buttered popcorn, as well as Duncan Hines brownie mix and pop-tarts.

Also, unpopped over burned every time. With extra salt and butter, please.

We had a popcorn maker when I was growing up. It was basically a large pan with a big plastic dome. On top of the done was a small compartment with a lid. You'd put oil in the pan, let it heat up, then add your kernels and put the dome on. In the compartment bit, you'd put butter and let the heat melt it all over the popcorn. Delicious. Also probably a fire risk.

I'm pretty sure that anyone who works in an office with a microwave is with me on the unpopped side of the fence.

I'd rather have unpopped than burnt, although I'll still eat the bag of popcorn if its contents are slightly charred. I hate waste. I do have an air popper and I find that I get the most consistently well popped and not burnt kernels from that, but oil popped on the stove is my favorite, flavorwise.

After spending part of my teen years working in a movie theater where I could eat all the free popcorn I wanted, it was about fifteen years before I could eat it again.

I err on the side of unpopped-- but I cook stovetop only.

My wife, however, is so phobic about having even one unpopped kernal that her popcorn turns out greyish-brown (and with no salt or butter). She's also nearly destroyed my good saucier several times making it. Thankfully, I finally convinced her to buy a cheap pot that she can cheerfully destroy with her blackened kernals.

UNPOPPED: when I was a freshman in high school, my grandfather took a bad fall, and my parents went to the hospital to check on him. I was put in charge of my younger brother and sister (then 10 and 7). To win points as an awesome babysitter, I told them I'd make popcorn on the stove (I had just learned how to do this). I don't know what happened, but the smoke alarm, which was connected to a new security alarm system, went off. The company called the house and said they could only disable the alarm with a security code, which I did not have, and my dad was not answering his phone in the hospital. The wailing SIREN alarm started going off, and the fire department sent the fire marshall and multiple trucks and ambulances. They insisted on inspecting the entire house, at which point my parents happened to arrive back home. Horrible, mortifying, sad, embarassing experience!

Actually, I didn't make popcorn for almost 10 years because of this incident. While I now make stove-top popcorn quite often, I always err on the side of unpopped... even the slightest bit of smoke sends me into panic mode!

I do my popcorn in a wok, and have to admit to liking it on the burnt side. I don't like it to the point where it's smoking and a couple of solid whacks to the smoke detector must follow, but a bit of charring is good. Toss with browned butter and smoked paprika, and I am soon thereafter on the couch, cold lager within reach, and a state of contented bliss slowly descending upon my mood.

Man, I am weird.

Unpopped!

I am a popcorn freak, brought up in a popcorn household. I still own my very first personal popper that my mom bought for me at a garage sale when I was going off to college. It is awesome and still does an excellent job of neither burning nor leaving too many unpopped kernels. However, I always know when to turn it off by the familiar slowed popping rate and avoid the dreaded burnt pieces on the bottom. Ick.

Does anyone else really like STALE popcorn? When it's kind of chewy? I will save half of my popcorn from the movie theater and eat it again in 2 days or so...yum! Maybe it reminds me of eating those giant 3-flavor tins of popcorn my family would sometimes get at Christmas...and wouldn't finish until well into the New Year! Haha, please don't judge.

the MICROWAVE? On a Foodie Blog? Please use the stove and pop popcorn the old fashioned way -- Then it is PERFECT every time. With only a very little practice -- and Orville Redenbacher this problem is nonexistent.

It really bugs me when there's a lot of unpopped kernels, so I err towards burnt - but only SLIGHTLY burnt, I'm talking, maybe a handful that are slightly burnt. I kind of like those ones! But, if I'm smelling burnt pop corn or half the bag is burnt then it's a no-go. Toss and restart the process.

I have to say though, my favorite part is getting to the bottom of the bag and finding the half popped ones. Even if there's only a crack in the shell, they're the best. Super crunchy!

As far as a diet technique, burnt popcorn works every time. The smell kills my appetite for hours.

Give me kettle corn any day.

Im with you Carey:
I'd rather unpopped kernels than burnt ones.

My father has a microwave with THE PERFECT popcorn setting.
Press the Button that says popcorn and when it dings: VOILA!
Not a second too soon or too late! I swear (well almost perfect)~

Burned!!! The best is when the burned, charred sections stick together. If done right they actually turn a little chewy =)

Love slightly burnt popcorn, mmm.

Stovetop popcorn is far superior and not too much trouble to make.
Totally worth it.

Old Orville got it right . His popcorn is the product of years of research . He modified the corn plant . OMG GMF WAD CAW . [ Oh my God . We are doomed . Call Alice Waters .

Sorry GMF = Genetically Modified Food
