Juustoleipä, an Excuse to Dip Cheese in Coffee

Do you like food you can't pronounce? Are you tired of biscotti? Behold juustoleipä, or leipäjuusto, a slab of Finnish "bread cheese" commonly cut into strips or cubes. Phyllis of Me Hungry! bought the Carr Valley Cheese brand at her local Wegmans and had some fun experimenting with it. When dipped in coffee, the bread cheese was "surprisingly good...took on a sweet profile...and it hardly melted at all." To clarify: this cheese does not actually contain bread. The curds, usually from cow's or reindeer's milk, are grilled or baked, which yields a brown, bread-like color.

I'll have to try this! Their Creama Kasa cheese is to die for.

I like frying this cheese in thin slices in a non-stick pan. It comes out a lot like Halloumi but is less salty and can be cut into thinner slices. If you live near a Wegman's they should carry it.

I sampled this at Whole Foods a few weeks ago--she served it with a cherry preserves--it was yummy and heavy. Just a little bit kept me fairly full. It reminds me a bit of paneer.

Is this similar to the "frying cheese" Trader Joe's just sent out an email ad about?

@ChloeA: I was just about to ask the same thing! It looks identical, even down to the label.

This cheese is the bomb. I will cut it into squares, and fry it up, throw in some walnuts to toast, and then drizzle the whole mess with honey. Delicious!

I had a sample at Wegman's, and they topped it with pesto and a tomato salsa. Good stuff!

Yeah it is the same kind Trader Joe's just sent out the ad about. I remembered reading "bread cheese" and I think it was about 4 bucks cheaper per pound!

This is what we actually eat in Finland. It is good in coffee but even better if you fry it in butter and eat with some jam (cloudberry is traditional but a bit hard to come by). Some add cream and let it simmer before serving it with some fresh berries.

Oooooh, squeaky cheese! No one ever believes me that it actually does squeak when you eat it. I didn't think they had it around here. I'll have to hit up Wegmans the next time I'm all the way upstate. Maybe I should make a trip just for that... My people rock. Go Finns!

It looks good but WHY dip it in coffee?

Brunkow Dairy (Darlington, Wisconsin) also makes an amazing bread cheese.

Let's face it, Wisconsin just basically rules when it comes to cheese.
California? Happy Cows?! I think not. Jerks.

I like a lot of interesting flavor combinations but I'm pretty sure coffee and cheese isn't one of them.
