White House Does Not Serve Foreign Beer

20090727-becksredstripehuebeer.jpgToward the end of the Boston Globe's story today about the whole Henry Louis Gates Jr. affair:

"I look forward to meeting Sgt. Crowley under more pleasant circumstances, and having that beer," Gates told the Globe yesterday in an email, saying a date has not been set. He said he’s partial to Red Stripe and Beck’s. He may not get his pick, as they are foreign beers, which are not stocked at the White House, under a tradition dating to the Johnson administration.

Hue beer would have totally irked LBJ, had it existed at the time. [via The Awl]

I sure hope they have some micro brews.

They may not serve it in the cafeteria or stock it for general use, but I doubt highly that some staffer doesn't have a stash of some imported brew tucked away in an office fridge.

On an unrelated note: Gates likes Red Stripe and Beck's? What an elitist! :P

Beer is something that should be consumed as locally as possible. As a rule I try to drink beer brewed no further away than 250 miles (and I prefer closer). Also, both Red Stripe and Becks are pretty 'meh'. I'm sure the White House brewmaster can do better for these guys.

Hitachino Nest White Ale - best beer ever.

Hey, at least they've got Stone, Russian River, Deschutes, and many other fine American breweries putting out quality craft beers. Think of the reactions of foreign diplomats when served an ice-cold glass of Arrogant Bastard by the President of the US!

I though Obama was all for Global Free Trade?

I heard on NPR this morning Obama is having a Budweiser (now a foreign owned company). He smokes and drinks tasteless commercial lagers?

@pearce77: But he does use Dijon mustard, so of course he's still elitist.

Funny that Budweiser, Coors, and Miller are all non-US companies.

OK, this reads as "White House Does Not Serve Beer" here...
