Watch It with Us: 'Top Chef Masters' Ep. 7: Let the Competition Begin

20090729topchefmasters.jpg

As much as we love the cool grace under pressure and kitchen camaraderie all the master chefs have exhibited so far this season, we're hoping for a little more intensity and, dare we say, drama, as we head into the Champion's Round tonight with master chefs Hubert Keller, Suzanne Tracht, Rick Bayless, Anita Lo, Michael Chiarello, and Art Smith. Perhaps the producers have the same thing in mind, as tonight's Mise En Place Relay Race sounds like an excellent way to ratchet up the intensity.

If you're planning on watching tonight's episode of Top Chef Masters, join us here in the comments at 10 pm ET. Who are you betting on to win it all?

PS: We're also loving host Kelly Choi's tweets (@KELLYCHOI). In a recent one, she responds to a follower who asks why we don't hear more from her: "They cut out ALL of my comments...trust me, me and critics all comment as much as one another."

A video preview of tonight's episode after the jump.

Maybe they edit out all her comments because she's a total hack who can barely read the dialogue off her script, let alone formulate any valid food criticism.

Man, this makes me wish I had cable. I'm cheering for Bayless, but I think Hubert Keller's the most likely to win it.

'Ubear without a doubt.

You gotta love the trumped-up intros. The "virtuoso," the "maestro," the "king," the "inventor of the modern steakhouse"... a teensy bit overblown, methinks.

"In addition to an advantage in the elimination challenge, the winner of the quickfire gets a hug from me, Tom Colicchio."

Suzanne... so much talent, so little affect.

It's going to be fun to see how the mise en place relay goes down.

(Tom in a sweater! Tom in a sweater!)

Rick Bayless, PhD anthropologist? Love it.

I am a sucker for all the warm fuzzies, but when are these chefs going to stop being nice and start getting real?

Is it wrong that all I kept thinking during the Mise en Place Relay was how funny and cuddly Tom looked in that sweater?

im sorry i am still 100% that kelly choi never eats (a bite for the camera doesnt count) and has a majherrr eating disorder. i am going to prove this.. or at least continue to spread the rumor

I'm a little worried for Art Smith at this point.

Didn't we already vote Ludo off the island? Ugh.

"Inventor of the modern steakhouse" is my favorite.

"Once upon a time, this fish was cooked brilliantly." Ouch.

Oooh. New lower prices on Glad ForceFlex® bags. Now 10¢ a bag.

Happy to see Anita Lo win this one.

there's just too much love up there on the screen. No love triangles, no back stabbing, just cooking. Really good cooking by serious chefs. That's refreshing, but it's hard to root.

Anita cut through those chickens like they were butter!! I haven't seen knife skills like that since Sakai's on Iron Chef!! Go Bayless!!

A hard-boiled egg inside a meatball did not wow the judges.
Also wondering when Art tossed all those Cajun sweet potato fries and they fell on the floor if the 3-second rule applied, or if he still had enough left over in the bowl for service.

Lo is a flinty-eyed kitchen assassin. I want to drink with her! Chiarello and Bayless should just smooch and get it over with. What was with the "limp wrist" comment someone made to Art? It would be nice if the show was longer, to really show us mortals the techniques these chefs are using.

"Chiarello and Bayless should just smooch and get it over with."

TFF bruisedbuddha, I was thinking the same thing. They would be so cute together. (NOT being sarcastic either, they totally would!)

Why do I keep seeing Thomas Keller's name during the opening sequence to the show when he hasn't made an appearance?

@DanielJ
I whole heartedly agree about Kelly. A fourth grader can read the script better than she can!

Ed Levine is correct in his comments

Show is hitting its stride -- unlike Top Chef there doesn't seem to be producer manipulation of keeping the most interesting chef around.

The best chef wins. period.

@Howlandwolfe
I'm pretty sure you're seeing Hubert Keller's name, possibly overlapping someone else's as it zooms by.
