Video: Squirrel Gets Head Stuck in Yogurt Cup

20090711-squirrel-head-stuck-in-cup.jpg

This poor little squirrel, no doubt looking for a snack, got its head stuck in what looks like a discarded Yoplait cup. So are yogurt cups the new six-pack plastic rings? (Video, after the jump.) Remember to dispose of containers properly, kids!

zOMG that’s the funniest thing I have ever seen [today]

Poor little guy kinda reminds me of my ex in the morning, just alot cuter.

hmmmm, got a tree rat problem here, think i'll start buying Yoplait.

I might be the only one, but I find these animal postings with marginal connections to food to be annoyingly off topic and pointless fluff. Maybe it's my deep inner fear that everything will eventually be overloaded with newsutainment "stories" about a "cute kitty playing in a box." I suppose the New York Times will eventually cave and start covering stories about water skiing chipmunks to try and stay popular. There's tons of other places for junk like this.

I thought it was interesting. It also poses the question of how we dispose of packaging.
@surf_monkey~don't like then why click on it? No one is forcing you to view it.

I once 'rescued' a squirrel that had his head stuck in one of those long thin bags that sunflower seeds come in. He was running around doing the same kinda thing but with a long blue bag over his head. It was cute, but I thought the suffocation might not be as cute. So I helped him get it off.

I have to say, I love squirrels, and I just couldn't stand the sight of him so helpless! I hope the person who took the video helped him afterward. Imagine having your head stuck in a vat of strawberry yogurt. Ick.

@surf I have to say, I agree with dhorst. Plus, I read this week that the NYTimes will soon be charging $5.00 a month for the privilege of reading their website online. I have only so many hours in the day to read blogs, and having a one-stop shop like this here --FREE-- site for my food-utainment, is appreciated!

Mind you, I have been known to find x-degrees-removed-from-food topics (like this lil squirrelio) to be egregiously awesome :)

This is awful.
I see no mention of the squirrel removing the container itself or of the person filming it removing it...did I miss something?
Otherwise this is just a really sad video of an animal in peril.
Shame. I really really hope this is the last time something like this shows up on here.

That video was filmed at my Alma Matter!!! I saw the video on TV today and realized it was the rose garden at my college!

I have to admit that the squirrels at my college would ALWAYS be in the trash cans, scaring the living daylights out of me as I'd walk by!

Eek! I recant!
I guess my computer gave me issues--did not see the beginning disclaimer!
My click took me straight to the video.
I am sorry.
I still don't like to see it here, but I am no longer fussed over the sad animal part.
Forgive me SE!

@sadiepix~perhaps you could look at it as a clip to draw attention to the fact that we don't always take into consideration how we dispose of our waste affects wild life. And to quote Adam, "Remember to dispose of containers properly, kids!" I'm kind of looking at as a community service message--"the more you know..."

I have to add that when I saw the video on TV, it was reported that the photographer removed the yogurt cup after filming. And I meant to say Alma Mater earlier -- Alma Matter sounds like an Indian dish.

Yoplait just fooled you all with some viral marketing- "C'est Si Inhumane," non?

xPETA won't approve of this.

@surf_monkey: I know. I thought twice before posting this, but then figured it was the weekend and we could all blow off a little steam. If you've noticed, lately we've been trying to restrict our off-topic "animals eating" video posts to Fridays.

@sadiepix: I was almost going to write that the photographer supposedly helped out the squirrel by removing the cup, but then I figured I'd be parroting exactly what it says below the "play" button: "A WYFF photographer runs across an odd site at Furman University. Don't worry, he later helped the critter out."

Just saw a video the other day with a cat getting his or her head stuck in a yougurt cup. Seems they are the new six-pack plastic rings! Wonder how to best dispose of them?

poor creature~payed for its mouth...

This is not funny, but I could not stop laughing. Maybe I am twisted.

I thought they were going to show the photographer removing the yogurt cup. How the hell are we to believe he actually helped the squirrel???

I saw this on one of those overcaffeinated morning shows. The hosts were all laughing but all I could think about is how sad it was that the squirrel had to deal with that in the first place and how the video should be taken as a commentary on how much plastic we make and improperly dispose of.

Yogurt cups in particular have lately started to rub me the wrong way - especially since they are often not accepted for curbside recycling (I'm looking at you, NYC) and so many people eat yogurt almost daily.

I understand why people would find the vid humorous, but the sadness trumped the laughs for me.

its cruel......Try some thing like that on yourself!!!!

I sincerely hope whoever taped this, did in fact help that poor squirrel. Imagine how terrified he must have been.

REMEMBER cut up those six pack rings before you throw them away and do the same with the yogurt containers. If you can't do it right then, then take them home and do it there. It takes less than a minute to cut up the rings and slice yogurt containers.

We're not the only animals that share this planet, we just act like we are.

If that squirrel is anything like me, it's trying to lick every last bit of yogurt out of that cup! I usually stick to Oikos yogurt, or TJ's greek yogurt, but if I'm a little broke and I see Yoplait on sale I'll buy some. I'm reminded EVERY TIME how much I hate the shape of those damned cups. They seem to PREVENT you from eating all your yogurt.

It's actually NOT funny. Many animals (skunks especially) die every year from this. Yoplait claimed they were going to redesign their cups several years ago, but it hasn't happened. Boycott yoplait until they change their cup design.

This is absolutely hysterical. The people getting so "sad" about this need some perspective: it's a squirrel, and the guy helped him out.

How can you not see the humor?! My goodness, if this happened to a person it would be funny, but that doesn't mean that you enjoy the suffering. It's haha funny, not I would wish it upon him so that I can watch it, funny.

And oh yeah, we might not be the only animals, but we are the most important. This IS serious EATS right? We eat animals here, don't we?
