Video: Braised Cow Lips = Totally Scary Looking

20090716-cow-lips.jpg

On Foodtease recently, bloggers Nicole and David tackled cow lips:

David and I almost shit ourselves when we took a good look at the beef lips we had brought home from the meat market. This is honestly the scariest looking food we’ve ever seen — even more so because it comes from a cow rather than some other crazy reptile/bird/fish thing where you would expect slime and spikes. Once we toughened up, there was a huge pay off in terms of yumminess.

Watch the video below (after the jump).

How to Make Braised Cow Lips

I'm interested as to why the lips look like alien teeth; do the little spikey things have a purpose?

That is downright NIGHTMARISH.

Those are horrifying... when he scrapes the knife over the spikes I almost lost it.

I'd still probably eat them though :)

wow. just-wow. i, uh-no, just wow.

aha! I knew my degree in Animal Science would come in handy.....
From what I have seen, the lips arent actually "spiky" in the sense that those thingies aren't stiff or sharp/pointy. From what I know, those projections, which are probably a bit fleshy, are useful for grazing. Cows use their tongues and lips to grip grass and rip it out of the ground (rather than using teeth to chomp it off) and then chew it.
This is my best guess. Please correct me if there are any cow experts out there.

No way! You ate that? Ew..... And yes, I am a baby.

Dang. I mean, there are limits and I think I just found mine.

@engmcmuffin: You rule. Thanks for the guessplanation.

Looks AWESOME! They say the bravest person ever was the first one to eat an oyster... I'd say you guys are the second bravest.

That is straight nasty.

No more gross than eating any other dead flesh, if you (over)think about it.

Amazing. Now, I want some. They're pretty gross looking, but I'm sure they're full of lovely connective tissue and tastiness. Anyway they look way more appetising than squeasel.

These guys need to learn how to roll out tortillas and hold a knife, though.

Also if you do a google image search for beef lips there are plenty of actual non-naughty pictures the stuff including the very first one.

thanks Adam, I think you're pretty awesome-sauce, too.

@engmcmuffin: I appreciate your smarts! Thanks!

At the latin market near my home they have these for sale quite often. I've always been scared and intrigued. I often thought to myself whilst holding the package, what does one DO with these things. Now I no. Might have to go buy a package and try them myself.

They have these in the meat counter at the Asian store I shop in. I always stop and look at them, they really are fascinating. While I'm adventurous in the kitchen, these are too over-the-top-foodie, even for me.

@engmcmuffin You know way more than I do technically speaking...coming from a hands-on view, I was raised on a beef farm and yes they use those to "grip" the grass/hay along with their tongues which allows them to bring it into their mouth to chew their cuds.
Fun stuff! Have never eaten cow lips but the tongue is VERY tasty!

Yup. That's my line.

You know...that's one part of the cow I have yet to try. Funky looking things, but now I'll have to be on the look out for them at the meat market! I doubt I can miss them! XD

I wonder if mum knows how to prepare them?

Interesting, where would I get some, I've never seen them, maybe a butcher shop would have them, though I totally wouldn't like to go in the shop lol
