The Joys of Unnaturally Flavored Sodas

Fess up, serious eaters, do you have a favorite?

20090709-fresca.jpg

I think it was a few weeks ago, when I ran into Tom Colicchio, that I found myself confessing my love for Fresca. I had seen an interview Colicchio had done in the New York Times Magazine in which he declared his love of Fresca: "Always in fridge: Fresca. It is just a great drink. No calories; tastes like citrus."

During our discussion we both acknowledged that what we loved about Fresca was its taste, even though neither of us could identify its ingredients. Hey, Colicchio is, after all, Mr. Ingredients, Mr. Craft, so it says quite a bit about Fresca if he can't tell us what's in it.

So now I know that at least two serious eaters, me and Tom Colicchio, think Fresca is pretty swell. It's more than pretty swell. It's seriously delicious, in fact.

Here is the ingredients list straight from a bottle:

  • Carbonated water
  • Citric acid
  • Concentrated grapefruit juice
  • Potassium citrate
  • Potassium Benzoate and EDTA (to protect taste)
  • Aspartame
  • Acesulfame potassium
  • Acacia
  • Natural flavors
  • Glycerol
  • Ester of wood rosin
  • Brominated vegetable oil
  • Carob bean gum

Sounds a little scary, I guess, but I'm no chemist. (And, yes, there's concentrated grapefruit juice, but not enough to add any calories.)

All I know is that it's delicious, refreshing, and more than a little citrusy, sort of.

So give it up, serious eaters. What less-than-all-natural soda can't you live without? (No colas allowed.)

121 Comments:

I'm pretty sure it was discontinued years ago, but I LOVED Citra. It was kind of like mixing fresca with orange soda, but it wasn't too sweet.

Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak Soda it is the soda I would drink if I saw it and I don't drink soda.

I love Fresca, but I prefer Squirt, another sort-of citrus flavored soda.

I drink almost no pop/soda at all anymore, but about once a year for nostalgic purposes I have to have a Faygo redpop.
Not even vaguely flavored like any fruit I know of, though they say they use every red fruit.
We would get it at the 7-11 as kids, or in glass bottles to take to the beach with us. I can't really claim to love it anymore, but the taste now and again is enough to being back fun memories.

Man do I love Fresca. But it has to be the orginal--none of this peach or black cherry nonsense. My good friend works at Cheesecake Factory, and once when I was there visiting her, she tipped me off to the fact that they have fountain Fresca. Fountain Fresca! I was amazed and more excited for my drink than my food.

Almost equally as good as Fresca is Diet Sunkist.

I have an unhealthy relationship with grape-flavored soda. When the craving hits, I would kill for a glass. Otherwise, meh.

Next on the list would be Sonic cherry limeades and Archer Farms blood orange soda at Target.

I have fond memories of going to Farrell's, an ice cream parlor, on my birthday drinking a Green River (I have NO clue what flavor that really is) and having a horn blaring the delivery of my banana split by a soda jerk.

*mourn* Ruby Red Squirt :(...

Bireley's Orange. It had a bite and must have been full of chemicals! There was an endless supply at my grandmother's.
We still talk about a friend, a very serious eater, who bought every single can of Fresca he could find in Los Angeles when they were going to change the sweetener. It lives in one's memory - all those cases of Fresca!!!

More than a few years back, Fresca mixed with white wine was our after hours light drink of the night. Add in some cranberry juice and you had our most requested bridal party punch. Nix the wine; just cran and fresca was one of my favorties when recovering from giving birth. It's my option for the craving I get for citrus (grapefruit juice alone in does a # on my stomach) and paired with other juices/fruit sodas, makes me feel like I'm kind of being good.

I don't remember the Green River; I'm going to have ask a few friends about that.

I like Black Cherry soda too, but I'm willing to bet I drink less than a dozen sodas in a year. Not counting the Boylan's Ginger Ale I add to my Ginger Rogers cocktails.

For a while a few years ago I was on a Fresca & gin kick but I got over it.

Big Red, a Texas fave....absolutely delicious over vanilla ice cream (Blue Bell, of course) for a Big Red Float.

Caffeine throws me off, and I prefer to eat my calories, so I get excited by any unorthodox caffeine free diet soda (i. e. diet sodas that are not diet coke). Fresca is great, but I usually have to specifically pick it out at the supermarket to get to drink it! Diet cherry limeades at Sonic are a treat too.

Yeah, Big Red...WTF was that flavor supposed to be? I always accociated it with the flavor of Beeman's gum.

I love Fresca and just discovered that it mixes so very well with Vodka and Cranberry to have a very refreshing summer drink. I also like to use it when I make Sangria to add just a bit of sparkly fizz...

Fresca is grapefruit soda.

Try Shasta diet grapefruit soda, very similar.

Black cherry soda! I like Stewarts brand. I'm also a big fan of orange soda. I've loved it ever since I was a kid.

Dr. Brown's diet black cherry

Pineapple soda is one of the strangest I've tried, its pretty popular here in Philly, I'm not sure if its a local thing or not.

@RegrettableFoodie - I was just going to mention that. I LOVE Fresca, and the Fresca/gin combo is my very lazy person's Tom Collins. Sweet, citrusy and fizzy - check, check and check!

Fresca is so refreshing and delicious. I need to buy some tomorrow.

LOVE Fresca!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in and around st. louis they have vess soda. many flavors. i'm not sure if they are all still around (i don't live there any more) but i liked peach, pineapple, cream, grape, and orange called whistle and most of all strawberry.
also, a soda that i think is artificial and natural is ski. the best.

i just googled ski and the web-site say natural. hmm. i can't check because they don't have it where i live. but i'm sure my dad has a case of re-fillable bottles and he can check.

i love fresca too, but I also like to just mix my own - poland spring sparkling water + any of the fruit juices from Trader Joe's. Or go alcoholic and add plum wine to my sparkling water!

You can't beat the clear, birch beer here in S. New England.
It has a clean wintergreen flavor and goes great with a burger or pizza.
Pepe's pizza serves Foxon Brand that is still made with sugar - none of that articificial junk in Fresca.

Another good local brand here in CT is Hosmer which is all made with natural ingredients and sugar.

I did try a red birch beer somewhere else ( i don't remember where) and there was no comparison.

Clear Birch Beer gets it's natural flavor from the black birch tree. If you scrape away the outer bark, you'll get a green skin and that beautiful aroma.

@RegrettableFoodie, amanda0730

My old boss bought me a fresca and gin once, when the bar didn't have any tonic water. She said she always drinks gin with fresca, never tonic.

I have to say I'm a Brio kind of girl. Every time I order Brio at an Italian restaurant,I get a smile or a laugh. Apparently not many Asian people drink Brio? I also like Tonic water with lime, with or without Gin.

oh, do i love artificially flavored drinks. here are my favorites: grape nehi, bark's root beer, dr. bronner's black cherry, jarritos brand tangerine soda, desnoes and geddes ginger ale {which i drank nonstop in jamaica 32 years ago and haven't found since} and orange fanta.

but i don't drink them anymore... sigh...

MOUNTAIN DEW BAJA BLAST
MOUNTAIN DEW BAJA BLAST

i had no idea fresca came in flavors. From the ages of about 11-15, that is literally all i drank. and there was some weird point when it got very scarce here in nyc and my mom would stock up on it whenever she was able to find it. somehow i don't drink soda at all now. it wasn't even a conscious decision, my fresca phase just fizzled out and i never went back to diet coke, which is all my mom drinks. i don't like the fizzy full feeling soda gives. ah well. those were the days.

I would like an ice cold glass of Tom Colicchio. YUM!

I'm a Fresca addict, too. In fact, I posted a recipe for Fresca cake on my blog earlier this year.

fresca
diet sunkist
diet raspberry snapple (does that count?)
kedem sparkling grapejuice (where my jews at??)

Welch's grape soda and Mountain Dew. Kinda trashy of me, but that's how I roll.

Oh, this is right up my alley. Diet Sunkist, diet A&W root beer, diet Sierra Mist (it's a great lemon-lime soda with more lime flavor than lemon). Last fall there was a real tasty diet 7up with pomegranate that I felt positively virtuous about drinking.

@coolname: Whistle orange soda! I always looked forward to my parents going out because we got to have Whistle orange. Remember the Vess red cream soda?

Nehi Peach is hands down my favorite unnatural soda ever. If I cold find some here in New Mexico, I'd be a very happy girl.

Strawberry Fanta and Grape Crush. love!

Vess Peach Soda
Vess Cream Soda (if it's not bright pink it's not really cream soda)
Jones FuFu Berry Soda

When I was younger, we used to visit my grandparents in Detroit where looked forward to getting to drink Faygo Red Pop (http://www.faygo.com/). No one could ever tell what flavor red was, but we finally figured out that it was sort of like strawberry cream soda (which was a bit unnatural for us). Of course, my grandparents would only serve us Faygo Pop products because they were convinced that Coke and Pepsi were terribly bad for us.

About 10 years ago, my dad took us to a "soda pop museum" in LA where you can buy the exhibits. :) We tried Green River there, that was tasty.

I love Jones Green Apple soda, mostly because it reminds me of the copious amounts "melon" soda I had in Japan. (Melon soda doesn't taste melon. Mostly like sugar. Very tasty.)

Fresca or Squirt with tequila and squeeze of lemon is the best. I discovered it at a wedding in Tijuana where it was popular with all of the locals. You must try.

Mountain Dew, or its low-brow store brand counterpart, Mountain Breeze. YUM.

I wish they'd make Fresca minus the aspertame. That stuff is suspect to me... Read a book which included info on all the FDA hearings about it, and suspiciously, researchers who found that aspertame could be unhealthy (cancer, I think) were than hired on by the people that produce aspertame. Anyone else hear about this?

I too am a lover of Fresca, but I also like Mountain Dew Big Red.

Fanta Strawberry flavored soda. My favorite burger place has it in their fountain, one of the reasons it's my favorite.

I also like Mountain Dew: Game Fuel. It's kind of a cherry-citrus flavor and it's in stores now, but Mountain Dew is tricky and discontinues and rehashes flavors all the time.

I am obsessed with fresca...obsessed

I'm a Pepper.

Welch's Grape! It's the best...

Are you sure catnip, or something equally crazy and addictive isn't in Fresca? I don't like soda, never drink it - never have, and don't have it in thye house. But I do LOVE Fresca. Don't buy it, but do love it. Boy is that stuff good. I also like Schweppes bitter lemon.

vimto. you've probably never heard of it, it's found commonly in south asia and the middle east. I can't even describe the flavor...cherry? overwhelmingly sweet but amazing. wow.

There was one at Walgreen's the other day that was labeled simple "Red." It was, indeed, red, with no indication of what flavor one should expect. The purple one next to it claimed "Grape." I have my doubts.

Diet Sunkist forever!

Nesbit's Orange Soda Pop! No Orange Soda comes close!

Hawaiian Punch anyone?

I love Fresca. And it's even better with tequila. I'm also a sucker for anything artificial grape flavoured. I remember having the best grape soda in southern NJ when our family vacationed there in the 80's. Unfortunately I don't remember the name. I also loved, loved Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer and still love any soda that tastes of wintergreen or sarsaparilla. When I was a kid, we used to go to the Pop Shoppe. They had the best unnatural flavours.

Not sure if it qualifies, but growing up in new england we had MOXIE! Not sure what flavor it is, but I drank it on a dare a few times and now I love the taste!

Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper

Tahiti Treat--don't remember who made it, but it was red and florscent and fruity and Juicy-Fruit gum sweet! Used to oreder it with a meatball or tuna sub every Friday night out with friends in high school--good times!

Also grape Crush--that's the deepest grape flavor i ever tasted!

Go here to find what you want:

I'm a cream soda and birch beer girl. ; )

There's always a case of Schwepp's Raspberry Ginger Ale in our pantry. I also love Fresca, and add it to my Sangria as well.

I hadn't thought about this in a long tie, but years ago when I'd visit my sister-in-law up in Ithaca we'd go to Wegman's and get this spicy ginger ale -- I believe it was the store brand -- it was spicy and "hotter" than normal ginger ale...it was yummy and such a surprise on your tounge.

Imma Cheer Wine girl!!!

Standard Fresca is about the only "diet" drink I can tolerate, so I get it when I'm in a soda mood. And it makes, as previously stated, a good mixer.

@Pavlov.....Moxie! I remember drinking that growing up as well.....don't have it in this, or perhaps any part of, GA, disfortunatley.

I'm really enjoying the SodaMix Fountain Mist flavor from the Soda Club USA site. It's a Mountain Dew knock off and very tasty.

I had a black currant Fanta in Tanzania a few years back, and it was awesome. I don't think you can find it in the States, but it was deliciously awesome.

Diet Squirt (grapefruit) and Diet Vernors (ginger ale)!

Birch beer for me, the red kind, preferably in a frosty mug.

Squirt, Fresca, or my favorite.... 50/50! Haven't seen it in years.

Is Diet Dr. Pepper considered a cola? Man, that stuff is so addictive! Birch beer is good too, but I tend to prefer diet soda just because all the sugar in regular makes my teeth feel really gross!

D&G Jamaican Kola Champagne

Mountain Dew Code Red

Dr. Browns Cream Soda

Dr. Browns Key Lime Soda

Diet Orange Crush
Diet 7-Up
Diet Canada Dry Ginger Ale
Diet Dr. Pepper.

Add me to the other Fresca fans, with Diet Squirt a close second. I also use it as a mixer, with vodka and a squirt of lime.

@sunbyrne and coolname: They still do make Vess! My mother is from St. Louis, and we grew up on the stuff. We would bring cases back every time we visited. I live in Central Illinois and can get it here, too, so now they bring it back when they come to visit me. Our favorite treat when we were little was a Vess Red Cream soda float with vanilla ice cream. Sooooo good!

Stewart's Key Lime soda is pretty fantastic, but I'm getting hooked onto this Brazilian soda called Guarana Antarctica. It's like a slightly sweeter and MUCH better version of ginger ale.

Polar Diet Orange Dry.

I just discovered my love for Fresca this past week! I don't think I'd ever had it, but Coca-Cola products were on sale and I bought some, thinking it would be good mixed with my Firefly Sweet Tea vodka. I ended up not using it for that, and now I'm hooked!

My other unnaturally flavored sodas include: Diet Coke Lime, Diet Pepsi Vanilla, and Diet Pepsi Caramel Cream (sounds weird, but it's a mix between a cola and a cream soda!)

As a Texas girl, when I drink the occasional coke, it's always Dr Pepper!! But in the fruity category, Big Red is always a good way to go.

I love Fresca and Diet Vernor's (when I can find it).

Another great soda ia Coco Rico, a coconut flavored soda you can find in Asian markets (and probably Latin ones, too). It's light and delicious, but sadly does not come in diet--at least, I've never seen it in diet form.

I share your passion for Fresca, but age has its advantages, at least for those who can enjoy their memories, true or not. As I remember it, Fresca was even better in its original formulation, which included cyclamate. Cyclamate was ultimately banned from the market because a rat eating its weight in cyclamate might get cancer -- there was a law, the so-called Delaney Amendment, that banned from food any additive that caused cancer when ingested in any amount. Since that was almost everything but exempted substances historically added like saccharine, it had the ironic effect of forcing the substitution of something that tasted worse but caused more cancer. Coca-Cola pulled Fresca from the market until aspartame was approved, then reformulated it, and the new stuff is great, but at least in golden memory the old stuff was even better. I bought a large quantity when they announced it was being pulled, but it had a limited shelf life and then there was no more. It's a little like the sugar/corn syrup story, I guess, except this substitution was prompted by a berserk regulation;

clear pepsi-ha! not. but do you remember that crap? ugh.
fresca is delicious--i hope some executive at the company sees this thread.
i bet they'd be surprised & pleased at the crazy love for it...perhaps enough to give all of us some for free?
when my sister and i were young we liked to pretend we were cowboys, so we always drank bottled sarsparilla-yum.

Also Fresca. When the new flavors debuted a few years ago, MY MOM BOUGHT OUT THE GROCERY STORE. I was born to love it.

Cactus Cooler!

I am one of those Diet Coke addicts. However, we do have a pretty awesome NATURAL sparkling water - Klarbrunn - made here in Wisconsin. Just carbonated water and natural flavor. It doesn't have sweeteners, just a touch of lemon or lime or black cherry or raspberry, so it doesn't taste like someone poured a ton of sugar in it.

I don't like their "citrus" flavor though, without sweetener it tastes bitter. I think I'd rather have a Sprite or 7-Up than drink that flavor.

Drinking Fresca right now, on an absolutely beautiful day. It may not be great for me, but it's tasting excellent.

It's a tradition local to the Allentown PA region, but I LOVE A-Treat soda. It's actually not unnaturally flavored--at the very least, they use cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, and it's so, so good.

Nobody's mentioned celery soda yet?

Also, Cheerwine. It's a Carolina thing :)

I really like Fresca. I remember when I went to Naples there was Coke (of course) and Fresca everywhere. There's citrus all over that part of Italy and I guess that's where they get some of the grapefruits for it...at least in Europe. So Fresca reminds me of Italy.

I'm not a big soda-drinker otherwise, though. I do have a weakness for cherry-flavored sodas (I used to have a Cherry Coke Zero habit) but I generally would rather just have tea or water. I am a sucker for unusual-flavored anything though and that definitely extends to soda. The last unusual flavor I tried was maple. It didn't really work in soda.

Whole Foods store-brand sodas generally suck, but their black cherry is darn good, and cheaper than Dr. Brown's; plus, it's made with sugar, not corn syrup.

In certain parts of Pennsylvania (though it's getting harder to find), you can get Frozen Run birch beer, which is clear and scrumptious. Fans of Crystal brand birch beer should seek this out, since Crystal went out of business not long ago.

I'd have to second Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak and add the gone but not forgotten Frank's Extra Gold Ginger Ale. Recall Frank's Cream soda was darn good too.

Diet Polar chocolate soda

I freakin' love Fresca in all cantations - original, peach and black cherry. I though my love of Fresca knew no bounds until I went grocery shopping this week. 5.99 a twelve pack? No way, no how. Can't do that. So, I guess I'll have to drink water this week. Ugh. ;)

To whomever posted about it being on tap at Cheesecake Factory - if you have a Pei Wei, it's there, also. :)

I love all perversions of grapefruit but my favorite is Ting! Marketed as "a little island sunshine in a bottle" and sold from a deli on 14th and 4th.

It's all about Squirt and vodka. A friend of mine has our favorite watering hole stock Squirt solely for us to drink :)

I love Stewart's Key Lime. I haven't ever seen in it VA, though. I miss Wegmans :(

Has anybody ever tried the weird flavors of Jones soda that come in mini-cans for Halloween? My husband and I tried some of the candy corn flavor last year, and it tasted like carbonated fake maple syrup. The first sip wasn't so bad, but the second was a little much.

I heart original Fresca. For other flavours, I dig the President's Choice series of diet fruit sodas: grapefruit, cranberry, pomegranate, even passionfruit now!

So many great "unconventional" sodas:

Green River, Big Red, Crush Grape, Fanta Strawberry, Nehi peach, and Faygo Rock n Rye.

Why did this post come at a time when I am trying to limit my soda consumption? *Sigh*

mmm, limonada-- it's lemon, and not too sweet. comes in a can at whole foods... and orangina! in the tubby glass bottle.

PC makes both grapefruit pop and a fresca knockoff - both good but different. Ting is definitely the best for grapefruit flavour.

Faygo does a grapefruit and lime soda called 60/40 that is pretty close to Squirt. I'm not sure if the 60/40 is a true representation of the proportion of grapefruit to lime flavor but it is pretty tasty. Especially for fans of Squirt.

I have tasted all three popular grapefruit-flavored sodas: Fresca, Squirt, and Citra. Citra had the most flavor out of the three. In 2004, Citra became "Fanta Citrus". I haven't tried Fanta Citrus yet, but I really hope its the same recipe as original Citra.

NuGrape with pure cane sugar.

Desnoes & Geddes (better known as D&G) Kola Champagne, Ting (both Jamaican sodas from my childhood)

Fresca! Fresca! Fresca!

Does anyone remember No-Cal Chocolate? It had a creamy head like root beer.

I heart Fresca too (and my mom is the ultimate Fresca addict!), but my absolute favorite is Diet Sunkist. I had a huge orange soda craving while pregnant with my daughter three years ago and have been hooked ever since. I'm pregnant with my second child now and am staying away from caffeine, so Sunkist is out... Diet Fanta Orange is caffeine free and quite a good substitute, though. Also LOVE Sundrop (a Carolina thing) and, when I could find it a few years ago, Diet Grape Crush.

I've never had the chance to try Fresca. But I remember when I was younger and on vacation, drinking some fruity sparkling drink on a big, slender blue bottle, I think it was Clearly Canadian, but can't really say, way too much time ago.

Oh and Aranciata is also a must!

OK here goes...I used to live in Concord NC.The first time I ever went in a Wat-A-Burger they had a drink called a "Witch Doctor" on the menu.I asked the nice young lady whats a Witch Doctor? Her reply "you get a big cup,put a handful of pickle slices in it,some ice, then a squirt of every fountain flavor thay had,all together".MMMMMMM.....Wat A burgers in Florida never heard of a Witch Doctor. Have you?

So glad others like Polar! Diet Polar cranberry dry for me...
Polar (based in Worcester, MA I think) still makes birch beer...and golden ginger ale - much better than "dry" ginger ale. Moxie isn't bad as long as it's cold.

my friends and i were obsessed with fresca when we were about 13... useed to put pez in it to make it fizz vary the flavor, and drink it out of shot glasses to be "cool." now that im a semi-grown up i should try it with alcohol :)
squirt is also good... it has a weird flavor and seems more "juicey" than other sodas to me. every once in a while i get this weird craving for orange soda [and speaking of being 13, does that remind anyone else of keenan and kel?]... when youre super thirsty and orange crush tastes SO GOOD, like nothing else.

I was a Fresca addict for a few years, and I still enjoy it occasionally. Then I discovered flavored selzter. When I lived in Colorado all I drank was Canada Dry Cranberry-Lime Seltzer. Sounds odd, but was it refreshing, and as I've gotten older (alas!) I don't enjoy sweet drinks as much as I used to. Now I live in St. Louis now I can't get it here. However, I've found LaCroix "Pamplemousse" seltzer, which has the grapefruit taste of Fresca, but without the sugar or artificial sweetner. Does anyone out there like flavored seltzers?

Fresca is definitely my favorite soda. I like the original, Peach, and Black Cherry Fresca flavors.

In South Florida/Miami there are three sodas in particular that I'm nuts for, and now that I live in Arizona they are pretty hard to find (though I've occasionally found them): JupiƱa (pineapple soda), Materva (yerba mate soda) and Ironbeer (I have no idea what kind of soda this is, it's dark like cola but is kinda fruity with a bit of a bite). And since I, too, prefer to CHEW my calories, I was thrilled to find diet versions of all of these (in Florida of course). So those are my must-haves when I visit my parents in Miami.

OH! There is another one that is really good too, Coco Rico - a coconut-water soda.

Seriously - no amount of Fresca, Sierra Mist, Diet Mt. Dew or Diet Sunkist will ever top my South Florida favorites.

I love Fresca. When I was a kid my favorite thing in the world was an ice cream soda made with Fresca and strawberry icecream. Hmmm, I haven't had that in years, but you know, it doesn't sound half bad.

I love Barq's diet root beer - but they've stopped making it! (At least in the 2-liter bottle - I can still find the 12-packs of cans occasionally.) Everything I love eventually disappears. Companies should pay me not to like their fringe products so they won't fail.

Here in southern California we are fortunate enough to have Jarritos brand soda, we love tamarindo, mandarina, pina (pineapple), toronja (grapefruit), fruit punch and my own personal favorite - mango. Delicious and always in bottles and in my opinion, soda tastes better from a bottle.

We also have a wonderful store in Los Angeles called Galco's Soda Pop stop. They carry EVERYTHING in soda. For instance, they have 46 kinds of root beer, alone. Brands that you didn't even know were being made anymore. Website is galcos.com and it's fun to visit.

BobbieAnne, it's TAHITIAN Treat and is made by Canada Dry. I know this because I, too, used to love it!

honestly, none..

a few years back i used to drink vanilla coke almost exclusively, and root beer every now and then, but i can't even finish a soda (or pop as we call it here lol) anymore because they're just too sweet to me.. after drinking mainly water for so long now, anything else is too much

the closest thing to soda i drink now is sparkling naturally flavored water.. i usually just save my calories and flavor for actual food

First of all, I love this post & reading all the comments - so many unknowns to me!
Fresca, LOVE! Just tried the Black Cherry which was excellent! Never thought to use it as a mixer!
Polar Orange Dry, which we picked up when our usual Lemon Seltzer was out; we didn't realize it was pop but loved it!
Tahitian Treat, good memories with this one! Somehow delicious with its sickening sweetness!
Ale-8-One, I can't believe it hasn't come up yet! It's an excellent ginger ale with a pun-y name. Maybe just a regional thing but you could only find it in KY where it's made forever. Then a few years ago, they started to allow it to be sold "'cross the river" in Cincy and southern OH. I loved this stuff!
Canada Dry Green Tea, a new favorite! Great combo (though a bit sweet) & such sparkling goodness!

I'm a firefighter, and our rehab vehicle would always have a dry mix powder of something called Squencher, it was sort of a generic Gatorade knock-off. There is nothing that tastes better than that stuff after a structure fire. It was randomly citrusy and just spectacular.

I am not really big on soda anymore BUT last summer I was in Nags Head, NC and found the famous Cheerwine, a NC thing. It is fizzy cherry-flavored soda, not cherry cola, just cherry soda. It is out of this world delicious.

Last week when we were close to the border of NC and leaving for WV, I hit a supermarket and bought myself a 12 pack to take home to NJ. We can't get it here. It is my favorite soda in a really long time.

Otherwise I really like Cherry 7Up but they don't sell it in cans around here, just 2 liter bottles, which I have no room for in the refrigerator. I also love Crystal Light Wild Strawberry (comes in a powder that you mix with water) and their Citrus stuff too. Excellent mixed with some green tea! I make fusions of all kinds of things.

I have never liked Fresca. When I was a child, all the skinny cool girls drank the Diet Fresca and that was all they drank (that and lots of folks drank Tab) - neither of which I could get a tasting for. My favorite soda at the time was Pepsi - just plain Pepsi. To this day, I prefer plain Pepsi over anything Coke, don't know why. BUT I prefer Diet Coke to Diet Pepsi.
