Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors

20090730-ice-cream-carton.jpg

What bookish flavor combo would YOU fill it with?

The New Yorker points us to the Facebook group People for a library-themed Ben & Jerry's flavor! As you'd imagine, word nerds can get pretty clever with the library-related puns:

Gooey Decimal System: Dark fudge alphabet letters with caramel swirls in hazelnut ice cream.

Writer’s Block: Coffee with fudge chunks and nicotine stains.

Over-Goo Fudge: Chocolate with marshmallow and fudge.

Sh-sh-sh-Sherbet! Key Lime or a chocolate/vanilla combination.

Can you top those? I'll try my hand....

The Twoberry Medal: Strawberries, blueberries, and shortcake mixed into crème fraîche vanilla ice cream.

It should be noted that Ben & Jerry's isn't considering a library-themed flavor at this point. It's simply a bunch of bookworms on Facebook lobbying for one. [via Diana]

I got excited for a moment!
Im part of that facebook group and thought our efforts had come to fruition!

The Stacks: a Chocolate Hay Stack based ice cream with a chocolate base, butterscotch chips, peanuts, marshmallows, and chow mein noodles!

i'd buy twoberry medal and devour it posthaste.

"word nerds" and "bookworms"

Wow, sounds like you hold librarians in really high esteem. As a librarian and member of the Facebook group, I'm really disappointed that such an attitude has found a home at SE.

@london_janice -- don't get your panties in a twist. It's all in good fun.

Actually "bookworm" gives me a great idea: Strawberry ice cream with gummi worms mixed in!

@ london_janice....consider it a compliment, seriously!

here's my shot at it:

Swirlculation Desk - swirls of caramel, chocolate fudge, and peanut butter in simple vanilla ice cream

Interliberry Loan - side by side strawberry and raspberry ice cream with a blueberry swirl. sounds kinda "meh", but fits the flavor title :)

@london_janice: Keep your hat on! That wasn't meant as a knock on librarians. I just didn't want to keep using the word librarian—and, besides, not all the folks in that group are necessarily librarians. If anything, I think that most of the folks who write on SE consider themselves word nerds and bookworms (I know I do) and see no more derision in those words than, say, geek.

i love this!
i'm joining that group immediately!
i'm a proud bookworm & word nerd!
my mom has worked as a librarian for over 40 years!
i really hope ben & jerry's does it!
maybe they could donate some or all of the proceeds to literacy programs?

@juliebugs--love the gummi work Bookworm flavor (even if I don't like the candy!)

Great topic @Adam. Off the top of my head, and letting my nerd flag fly proudly....

Overblue (Vanilla with Booberry cereal and blueberries)

Poetic Licorice (Vanilla ice cream with chunks of licorice)

A Tale of Two Cookies (Vanilla ice cream with chocolate Oreos and vanilla Oreos mixed in)

Checked out (Butter Pecan with Chex Mix)

Micro-phiche: A verson of Phish Food with teeny-tiny chocolate fish. Served in a transparent container with upside-down, backwards writing.

Cardamom Catalog - cardamom, cinnamon in coffee or green tea ice cream

SeriousBookworm here, london_janice! :) but I can't think of anything much right now.

Cliff-Hanger: cinnamon coffee ice cream with thick swirls of caramel and dotted with brownie batter chunks

My SO thinks there should be a "library paste" flavor. I don't remember library paste so I have no idea what he's talking about...

I like the idea for Micro-phiche, but with tiny books instead of fish?

Gooey Decimal System is not only a hilarious pun of a name, but the flavor itself also sounds delicious. I would buy it!

what a creative bunch we've got in here, guys. brilliant!!

I'm so sorry but the plain white carton reminds me of lab mice. are they by any chance breathing holes?

Roady Refrescante, Rocky Road and Kaluha, refreshing and informative right behind the desk

@HeartofGlass - I LOOOOOOVE YOUR "CHECKED OUT" IDEA!!! I love throwing a handful of Chex Mix into my plain vanilla but have never tried it with butter pecan...now, I must! Excellent name, too! I wonder if others realize the sheer amazing deliciousness of Chex Mix in ice cream?

@Sandalola - ALSO a great flavor combo suggestion!

@Jethro--it does sound pretty good! I may try it myself--butter pecan is a very overlooked flavor and salty/sweet is an awesome combo. All of these sound great!

And well, library paste does sound good in a way, too! I think they are talking about that white, chalky stuff you stir with a plastic, Popsicle-style rod.
