Fancy Fast Food

Fast food has been turned on its head by Fancy Fast Food, a blog that transforms items like the Popeye's chicken above into Spicy Chicken Sushi. There are detailed instructions for every dish so if you've ever been interested in turning a Taco Bell tortilla into tortellini, there's now a handy tutorial. If you have your own fancy fast food creations, you can submit them by e-mail as long as you stick to their rules: no additional ingredients other than a garnish, and no gratuitous post-processing in Photoshop.
According to their Twitter feed, they were also just offered a book deal. As Fancy Fast Food says, "Why have it your way, when you can have it the fancy way?" [via BuzzFeed]

I don't get it. Is it so you can present fast food to guests but have them think they're eating a fancy dinner? I think it would take me less time and effort to just make a real meal. I can't imagine taking the time to rinse off a tortilla and then cut it into circles!

The rare times I bring fast food home for dinner, I've always had a strong neurotic need to "plate" it. I always take the burger or burrito or whatever out of the wrapper and put it on a real plate with the fries tastfully arranged to the side.
I thought I was odd, but this takes it to the next level!

I .... wha..... why?
It doesn't taste any different, and it's still really bad for you. If you're going through all that effort anyways, why not just prepare some real food?

i was in a bad mood thinking about how idiots like these get book deals to perpetuate bad, disgusting ideas. but then i looked at that thereifixedit website, cracked up, and feel much better. how did i not know about that site before?!

@rheogs: i plate my fast food, too! it somehow forces me to eat it slower, and i tend to feel fuller! ah, playing mind games with yourself...

All the major book publishers have been fairly enthusiastic about making book deals with blogs lately... I have no idea how much they're paying... so if you have thoughts about a food blog that speaks to the lolcat demographic, do it. Don't try to be the next Elizabeth David. You might get an IACP award, but your sales will be terrible.

style over substance (actually, style at the expense of substance). not a fan of that blog.
are any of these books actually selling? it seems like editors are really running out of ideas. then again, julie/julia somehow got adapted into a movie so maybe the money is there..and there is always a market for cutesy gift books around the holidays. also, i doubt these deals are very valuable (as alluded to above by ortolan).
