Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It ...

Food writer Michael Ruhlman has thrown down the gauntlet on his blog, where he's challenging readers to make a BLT from scratch. Don't worry, you don't have to raise the pig:
From scratch means you grow your tomato, you grow your lettuce, you cure your own bacon or pancetta, you bake your own bread (wild yeast preferred and gets higher marks but is not required), you make your own mayo. All other embellishments, creative interpretations of the BLT welcome.
This sounds like a great idea. I think we're going to have to buy one of those upside-down tomato buckets and try growing some plants in the SE office window.

I think that all these "make this from scratch" posts lately are interesting as a social experiment, but nothing more really. Humankind figured out a long time ago that having citizens specialize in certain crafts (baker, cobbler, rancher, etc...) makes us all a lot more productive.
But hey - if someone has the free time to do this and they enjoy it, then more power to them. =)

The real test of DIY is: is it better? I don't mind knocking myself out to create something from scratch if it is clearly superior to what I can buy in the marketplace. But, on the other hand, life is too short to make something that I can buy and is comparable in quality to what I can get in the market.

I accept the challenge. I have yet to make my own bacon, so I'm not quite sure if it is better than market bacon. Tomatoes have a few more weeks till they fruit.

I guess I'm the oddball here. I cured bacon a while back and still have some in the freezer. I bake all the bread we use, so that's no problem. Tomatoes and lettuce would be more of a challenge. By the time I have tomatoes ready to pick, lettuce won't grow well because it will be too hot, unless I wait for a late fall crop of lettuce. But right now? Not a chance.

I saw this on his site the other day...the cure your own bacon thing I don't know if I would actually do (though I very much want to!) but the rest I can handle...have tomatoes and arugula growing in the garden. Sounds like fun!
