The Hard-To-Find Grocer

No, this is not the name of a grocery store hidden behind some trees—it is an online grocery store for items that are hard to find. At the Hard-To-Find Grocer, you can find various rare food products, like Sioux City Berry Berry Soda or Van Camp Beanee Weenee. It also carries products from larger brands that often don't make it into stores, such as Duncan Hines Strawberry Supreme Cake. Items are added to the site based on suggestions and requests. Sadly, it doesn't yet have the food of my childhood, Tastykakes (only available in the mid-Atlantic), so I'll have to stay near Philadelphia to get my fix. [via Manhattan Users Guide]

Nuts! No Del Monte brand pickles. All I can find down here are Vlasic and Del Dixie. Del Monte's kosher dills are far and away superior to the other brands.

I'm crossing my fingers for southeastern Massachusetts style Coney Island sauce for hot dogs.

You can order Tastykake's online directly, http://www.tastykake.com/

I ordered from them a few years ago, and at that point you had to order in bulk (which was fine for the occasion).

Hi. This is Mike and I work for The Hard to Find Grocer. We used to carry Tastycake but had a hard time selling enough to keep the dating fresh. So unfortunately we had to discontinue it. See my profile and you can email me direct with requests. Next Thursday (6/18), we launch www.crossroads-market.com. It is a six store online shopping mall and the hard to find grocer will move there. We will expand by years end to 12 stores. Lots of cool unique shopping to be had there so check us out next week and please send me those requests and if your reference Serious Eats I will move your requests to the top of the list!
